DRAYTON VALLEY -- Rob Maksymetz lets out a laugh when it's suggested he was practising for a future career in Ultimate Fighting.

The slight Sexsmith skip made a somewhat impressive 2-3 debut at last year's provincial and had a chance to make the tiebreaker with a last-round win.

There is a team here representing the Peace District and carrying his name. Trouble is, Maksymetz is now playing the role of cheerleader.

He broke the scaphoid bone in his right hand at a New Year's Eve bash.

"I had a few cold ones,'' said Maksymetz, who had been delivering a few blows at a punching bag. "Basically, my buddy threw the heavy bag toward my hand and I cracked it when it was coming toward me.

"I didn't feel it until the next day. I went to the hospital, they bandaged it up and ... it was a bad break."

However, his team got through the districts with Kelsey Dusseault throwing last rocks and Ken Powell subbing at lead.
