Icemaker's challenge

DRAYTON VALLEY -- Over the years, Tim Yeo has been known to lay it on thick over a pint or two. But when he arrived here to check out the surface, the icemaker knew right away he'd have a few sleepless nights ahead of him.

The local crew had been over-enthusiastic about water application. Yeo knew he'd face some unanticipated work.

"Yeah, quite a bit,'' said Yeo. "We had about three inches of ice, so we had to cut a bunch of ice out.

"Of course, when you cut, it becomes unlevel. It kinda snowballs and that's why we're putting it back today."

Yesterday's practice times had to be moved back more than three hours as there was still water sitting on the surfaces when the teams arrived.

"Everything should be fine now ... I'm hoping anyway,'' said Yeo, who hasn't had much sleep as he's been working around the clock.

"All day Friday we spent cutting the ice out. I jumped on the Zamboni and started cutting. You should have seen the snow piled up at the end of the rink.

"We were a day and a half behind right from the git-go. You don't want to start out with three inches of ice, because then you have no control."

There was only so much Yeo could do in the time allotted.

"Basically, we cut an inch out," said Yeo.

"I would have liked to have cut an inch and a half out, but we didn't have the time. We're running with four inches of ice now ... with the hockey ice underneath.

"We'll get it. It's just a matter of time.

"The players will be able to pick up a lot of what's going on during their practice time.

"We'll be able to pick up a lot watching them because we haven't even had a chance to throw a rock on it."
