The impressive, brand- spanking new Safeway Championship Trophy was finally unveiled yesterday.

And, as promised, it includes the names of all winning teams of the men's provincial play from Howard Wood Sr. in 1925 to Jeff Stoughton in 2006. There was even a correction for the 1948 team that won with only three players.

"The trophy is excellent, especially getting all the teams right from the beginning on one trophy," said four-time champion Kerry Burtnyk, whose name appears on both sides. "It follows with the tradition of our sport, honouring all our past championships, and I'm really excited for that reason."

MCA executive director Ian Staniloff was also excited as he counted all the empty spaces that go well beyond the MCA's current sponsorship agreement with Canada Safeway.

CHUGGING: Petersfield's fourth-seeded Dave (Night Train) Boehmer struggled through the first half of the season but got on a roll at the MCA's recent annual bonspiel.

"We played well through the bonspiel and we had to beat some good teams to get there so, we feel good about that," said Hub Perrin, Boehmer's lead. "Talent's not an issue. We've got great players, it's just a matter of putting it together at the right time."
