Six teams still unbeaten

It was perfect no more for several teams at the MCA Bonspiel yesterday.

Entering the day, 16 teams had yet to lose. That number was shaved to six before last night's late draw, made up of minor events.

St. Vital's Brad Haight, La Salle's Randy Neufeld, Granite's Bob Sigurdson, Fort Rouge's Howie Restall, Petersfield's Dave Boehmer and Valour Road's Taylor are the undefeated rinks.

Mike McEwen's Assiniboine squad, who is still looking for a provincial berth, was on one leg after an 8-1 loss to Charleswood's Mark Olson. Reid Carruthers, who started the bonspiel with a 6-0 record, dropped both games yesterday, including an 8-4 loss to Randy Dutiaume.

"Going into (yesterday) we wanted to make a run at the grand aggregate, and we had a bit of a tough one (yesterday) morning," said Carruthers. "Dutiaume outplayed us, and he took advantage of some breaks that we gave him."

In the afternoon game against Brendan Taylor, the Carruthers squad decided to lighten things up by wearing pajama bottoms.

In addition to the PJs, Carruthers donned a Pittsburgh Penguins jersey, while Jason Gunnlaugson was the team's court jester. Justin Richter wore a welding helmet as a city worker, and Tyler Forrest played in a short-sleeved vest and earflap toque.

"We just wanted to be kind of loosey-goosey," said Carruthers.

ON A ROLL: The Neufeld rink continued its incredible roll with two more wins yesterday. They're 8-0 headed into today's draws. They also won the Northern Berth Bonspiel and the Manitoba Curling Tour's Thistle Integrity Stakes last month, and now Neufeld has his sights set on the grand aggregate title.

"It's always been my dream," he said after beating Bob Turner in Stonewall yesterday.

"I've never done it because it's tough. There are a lot of good teams."

Neufeld's daughter, Sabrina, who plays third for provincial champ Calleen Neufeld, leaves on Feb. 1 to compete at the Canadian Junior Men's and Women's Championships in St. Catherines, Ont.

BITERS: Vic Peters' Fort Garry team, skipped by his son Daley, was eliminated from provincial consideration after a 10-4 loss to Bob Atkins yesterday. Murray Woodward's Ste. Anne squad also lost its second game in a major event, 8-3 to Fort Rouge's Craig White.
