What a wonderful surprise.
Found in our mail slot yesterday morning was one huge cheque that will help keep our Empty Stocking Fund campaign motoring through the month.
The Winnipeg Motor Express Inc. raised a grand total of five grand for the Christmas Cheer Board at its service awards dinner last month.
"This annual event recognizes our owner operators, drivers and staff for their years of service," writes Brian Page, the company's president and CEO. "This year's fundraising, by way of the prize draws, raised $2,500. In keeping with the spirit of the holiday, Winnipeg Motor Express Inc. matched the funds raised.
"We are confident you will reach this year's goal in fundraising for the Cheer Board."
Your generosity has helped double our modest total to date but we are still well short of the record of almost $99,000 in cash and kind that we reached last yuletide.
Thank you all for thinking of the Board's needy kids during your annual celebration. And have a wonderful Christmas.
CURL CHALLENGE: Our old curling friends have already gotten into the act, too. The Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club has already started its third annual Cheer Board Challenge to raise some cash for our Fund. So, please toss some change into the designated jars that my good friend and club manager Darlyne Fathers has set up around the club and buy lots of 50-50 tickets. This is a promotion that she and I brought over from the dearly-missed CFB Curling Club and if anyone wishes to make a separate donation in that club's memory, let me know. And you don't have to go to the club to do it, just send us a cheque or a little cash.
Last year, these kind-souled rock-tossers at Kerry Burtnyk's home club helped us raise a record $1,227. Please give generously, again.
OLD FRIENDS: We are starting to hear from a lot of our most loyal friends now. Bob (Socko) Sokalski of Pitblado Barristers and Solicitors is leading the way among our private donors with a cheque for $500.
"A worthwhile endeavour for a worthwhile cause," writes Sokalski, who used to throw those great Cheer Board Bashes at the old Wise Guys Downtown. "Hopefully, this modest donation will remind some of the other people in the sports world to get off their wallets and pony up some cash for the less fortunate."
Well said, Coach Bob, and have a marvellous Christmas.
We actually have heard from some others in the sports world, like another old reliable, former Winnipeg Blue Bombers president Bruce Robinson, who sent $200 our way.
"Good luck with your Empty Stocking Fund ... and go Bombers!" he wrote.
Thanks, Bruce, and a most superb Christmas for all who have donated.
MAILING: Please send whatever you can spare to the Sun's Empty Stocking Fund, 1700 Church Ave., Winnipeg, Man., R2X 3A2. Receipts will be issued for donations of $10 or more.
