Team of the week

Although we are introducing a new feature this season, our Team of the Week will have a twist to start things off.

More to recognize his feats at the end of last season than what he did last week, our nod goes to Valour Road's Reid Carruthers.

Not only did Carruthers, third Jason Gunnlaugson, second Derek Samagalski and Tyler Forrest become the Cinderella story of the Safeway Select, losing the final to Charleswood's Jeff Stoughton, they went on to win the inaugural Asham's Super League championship. Carruthers then won the club championship and has earned enough CTRS points to get an invitation to December's Canada Cup qualifying spiel in Edmonton.

This season, Justin Richter has replaced Samagalski at second and, like last year, the team has gotten off to another slow start. The squad earned $3,500 at a WCT spiel in Vernon, B.C., its only payday thus far.

"We built a team that could take the losses you need to take to become a great team," said Carruthers, 22.

"We are committed to 2010 (Olympics)."
