Late addition in running

On Thursday, St. Vital's Marlene Lang figured her curling season was pretty much over.

Today, she's in the thick of a battle for the last berth in the provincial Scott Tournament of Hearts, which is slated for Jan. 25-29, in Thompson.

'TURNAROUND'

"It's an amazing turnaround," Lang said after her team beat clubmate Jennifer Clark-Rouire 10-7 in an A-side qualifier to advance to today's championship round at the MCA women's bonspiel.

"A team (Thistle's Lori Boudreau) dropped out at the last minute, and we were very lucky to get in."

Lang said her foursome, which includes Heather Gibson, Lori Campbell and Cathy Gillespie, worked hard to prepare for this bonspiel, even though they were only on a waiting list until Thursday.

"We planned on being in," she said. "Over the last few weeks, when we realized we weren't in, we said we would just keep practising and do what we have to do just in case we get in," she said. "We didn't want to come into this unprepared.

"It's working for us. The team is communicating well, and we are pulling off all the shots, and we just want to keep on going. The whole team is playing very well, and getting the (Scott) berth is basically in our own hands now."

The quarter-finals are slated for 9 a.m. today, with the semifinals set for noon and the final scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the Granite.
