Arnold Asham rushed to the rescue of a Safeway Select city zone draw late Friday.

With a transformer at the St. Vital Curling Club literally burned out and the power about to be turned off during repairs, Asham offered four open sheets at the Valour Road club, which he now owns.

So all eight teams, St. Vital icemaker Andrew Atkinson and his crew, and MCA umpire Larry Jones packed up and headed across town.

PREPARED THE PEBBLE

The icemakers prepared the pebble, the players got their practice time in, and all four games were played with nary a complaint from the competitors.

"This is going to be our story to remember the zones on Friday the 13th," Select chairperson Sharon Thiessen-Woods said yesterday. "And it's a feel-good story.

"It was fortuitous that (Asham) was (booked on the late draw)."

Power was restored at the St. Vital by midnight Friday, and the ice was ready in time for yesterday's 9:45 a.m. draw.
