Valour Road's Dave Boehmer was named the top seed for the Safeway Select city zone playdowns for the first time ever, the Manitoba Curling Association announced yesterday.

Mind you, Boehmer usually competes in a rural zone out of Petersfield.

"Oh, I didn't know," Boehmer said at the Grand Slam's Canadian Open yesterday. "That's a nice honour."

Second Pat Spiring returned to third here yesterday at the request of Ken Tresoor, who dropped to second. Should they win some cash here, they will keep that combination for the zones.

Ten of the top 14 seeds hail from Valour Road's new Super League, including Ryan Fry and Vic Peters -- the second and third seeds, respectively.

Rounding out the top five for the zones, to be played Monday through Sunday, are Elmwood's Pete Nicholls and Valour Road's Mark Lukowich.

Also in the top 10 are, in order: James Kirkness and Dave Smith, both of Valour Road, John Bubbs and Howie Restall, both of the Granite, and Pembina's Bill Kuran.
