Youth will be served

HALIFAX -- Sherry Middaugh came off the ice and sang the song.

"Stayin' alive! Stayin' alive!'' she warbled, then threw her arm up in the air and assumed the famed Saturday Night Fever pose.

"That's about my era, too,'' said the 39-year-old Ontario skip who along with 37-year-old Calgarian Shannon Kleibrink, who has been on the bubble for days, stayed alive to today's final draw of the round robin of the 'Roar of the Rings' Olympic Trials.

As is the case with young guns Brad Gushue and John Morris in the men's event, youth is being served in the women's competition as 28-year-old Kelly Scott and 25-year old Stefanie Lawton clinched playoff positions - Scott with a 7-1 record and Lawton at 6-2.

Kleibrink, who has won four straight since she put herself on the edge of the cliff, and Middaugh, who once led this thing at 3-0, are both sitting with 5-3 records.

"I feel a lot better now than I did two days ago,'' said Kleibrink of her two-win day here yesterday to stay alive.

"We're getting some breaks and making some breaks that weren't happening before.''

If either Kleibrink or Middaugh win today, the three teams sitting with 4-4 records behind them are toast no matter what happens. Both have to lose for 45-year-old Betker and 41-year-old Sherry Anderson, both of Saskatchewan, and Jennifer Jones to end up in a tie-breaker.

For the record, 45-year-old Colleen Jones was officially declared deceased - "we're dead, we're done'' - as she slipped to 3-5.

"Youth is calling and it's terrific,'' she said. "Those are great young team and they're playing so well. They make all the shots. They are fearless and full of confidence.''

Betker is just happy to be hanging in there with a chance to stay alive for another day.

"There are a few of us old farts,'' said Betker, of those who do not have their fate in their own hands.

"It speaks well for the future of curling,'' she says of the young rinks.

Scott doesn't seem to be pinching herself.

"We're in the playoffs now and we can take care of the No. 1 spot (today),'' she said of her game against Anderson on the draw which also includes Kleibrink vs. Lawton, Middaugh against Colleen Jones and Betker vs. Jennifer Jones
