A Young gun is proving that he has inherited his mother's curling genes.

Springfield's Rylan Young cracked a five in the third end en route to a 7-4 victory over Warren's Andrew Hunt in the junior men's final of the Optimist Assiniboia Junior Classic at the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club yesterday.

Young, 19, earned $2,400, the most coin he has ever made in curling.

"By far," said the son of former provincial women's champion Karen Young. "It feels good. It's my biggest win ever."

Supported by third Keith Edie, 18, second Braden Zawada, 17, and Phillip Cook, 18, Young was testing a new foursome for next year's juniors.

"It gives us a boost for next year, for sure," Young said.

Hunt settled for $1,000.

In the junior women's final, Victoria's Heather Pierson upset La Salle's reigning junior women's champ Calleen Neufeld 6-3. Pierson pocketed $1,000 while Neufeld got $500.

MIXED PLAYOFFS: In Morris, a pair of former provincial mixed champs will face each other in the Page playoff 1-vs-1 game of the Manitoba mixed championship this morning at 9. Brandon's Rob Fowler and Mike McEwen of Fort Rouge both finished first in their respective pools with identical 6-1 records. The winner advances to today's 5 p.m. final, while the loser plays the winner of this morning's 2-vs-2 match in the 1 p.m. semifinal.

David Hamblin of Morris will play the winner of last night's tiebreaker between St. Vital's Renaud Gagne and Riverton's Norm Magnusson, who defeated Kyle Werenich of Fort Rouge 7-6 in an earlier tiebreaker.

Manitoba's Jeff Stoughton won $10,000 at the Grand Slam's Players' Championship in St. John's, Nfld., on the weekend ... Rumour has it Granite's Bill Kuran, who skipped one of the top teams on the Manitoba Curling Tour last season, will sit out next year due to personal reasons. Some of his teammates have already joined other squads.
