Morris fixated on Canada Cup berth

John Morris has a different perspective on what he'd like to take home from this weekend's Canada Cup West. He's already earned an Olympic Trials berth as the top-rated Canadian Team Ranking System squad following the 2003-04 season.

PLAYING FOR SOME CASH

After beating Mark Johnson 7-3 in a B final last night, Morris is playing for some cash in today's championship round and looking to be one of the teams to get invitations into the Canada Cup.

"We're here for the Canada Cup berth - that's a pretty good event,'' said Morris. "It'd be nice to get back to that. We've lost the final (to Randy Ferbey) two years in a row. We sort of feel like we have some unfinished business.''

The top four teams in this event get Canada Cup berths. Ferbey is back as defending champion, so top-CTRS survivor Kevin Martin nailed down a trip to Kamloops with his C final win over Ryan Keane last night.

"Going into Christmas, it's good to get a bit of a bonus because we've struggled a bit this year,'' said Morris.

"It's always nice to play in Edmonton because I've got a lot of family here. If feels like more of a holiday than a curling tournament.''

THE RIGHT MOOD

Good spirits is the mood that the Jan Betker's team found itself in after their 8-6 B final win over Edmonton's Deb Santos on the women's side.

It's another step along the way for three members of the team formerly skipped by Sandra Schmirler, the only Canadian rink ever to win an Olympic gold medal.

"Even just to qualify for here, we had our eye on it,'' said second Joan McCusker.

"We were so disappointed the last time around (2002 Trials). We came so damned close, losing two finals to get to the Trials. Just to qualify for this event, we were celebrating.

"Back to the ol' one step at a time. That win was nice. We've had a really good fall.

''Jan looks so comfortable and that's what we needed. I'm proud of us.''

Winnipeg's Karen Porritt grabbed the other B berth with a 7-3 win over Kelly Scott.
