The comeback ended one end too soon yesterday for Micky Lizmore. A Londoner playing out of the Guelph Curling Club, Lizmore lost his opening game at the Ontario bantam mixed (16-and-under) championship at the London Curling Club when Derek Whitehill of Peterborough scored one in the eighth and final end for a 5-4 win.

He found himself down 4-2 after five ends but tied it with a single in the sixth and a steal of one in the seventh.

In the other first-round games, Leslie McCormack of Brampton beat Nick Therien of Huntley 5-4 in an extra end; Matt Stoll of Niagara Falls took a 5-2 lead through five but needed a single in the last end to edge Andrew Clayton of Brant 6-5, and Samantha Peters of Brockville stole four points over the fourth, fifth and sixth ends to beat David Coffey of Toronto Tam Heather 7-4.

In the first draw of junior mixed (21-and-under) competition last night, Mike Corby of Ilderton met Lee Merklinger of West Ottawa Granite, Derek Abbotts of Sarnia took on John Grant of Ennismore, Mike Anderson of Thornhill Bayview played Mike McLean of Ottawa CC and Jodie Hodgson of Guelph met Brian Gray of Orangeville.

Both championships continue with two draws apiece today through Saturday. There are no playoffs unless a tie for first occurs after the round-robin. If needed, games will be Sunday morning.
