How will Canada do at the World Hockey Championships?
Thu, May 3, 2012

By TERRY JONES, QMI Agency

Canada failed to make the medal round in each of the last two World Hockey Championships and finds itself in a pickle going into this tournament, too, having dropped from No. 1 to No. 5 in the world rankings, after winning gold at Vancouver 2010.

Finland is ranked No. 1, Sweden 2, Russia 3 and the Czech Republic 4, with the Americans a few points back of Canada in sixth.

Thus Hockey Canada put Steve Yzerman and his Sochi 2014 Olympic management team together early and they challenged Canada’s top available young stars to come here to win gold, and get the No. 1 seeding with all the scheduling, dressing room, practice time, etc. advantages back.

Seems kind of trivial, compared to what some of the other counties are here dealing with this year.

If Canada missed the medal round for a third straight year – well, lets not go there yet.

This is the best team Canada has brought to the world championships since the lockout year and maybe any year before that.

How do you think Team Canada will do at the 2012 World Hockey Championships in Finland and Sweden? Have your say in our forum.

I agree with all you are saying. I read the arctile and all I heard was a cry-baby. I love the sport and it is one of the few that attending it is something special and I can even tolate on TV. But the apple polishers need to get their ducks in a roiw for this to work. I would love to see $25 tickets for games. Something to put butts in the seats.

I have been and continue to be a great fan of Paul Henderson. I am embarrassed as a Canadian that this man who scored some of the greatest goals in Canadian Hockey History remains out of the Hockey Hall of Fame. The most obvious slap in the face is that the guy who he scored on, Tretiak, never played in the NHL and He is in the Hall. How in the name of decency can this be explained. Sports writers and fans alike are perplexed. If this isn't personal, then someone from the Hall should quit hiding and tell Canadians why Paul has been blackballed. Maybe we should petition Canadians to boycott the Hall as it appears to have a less than honest approach to fairness. Jim Hickey

Bang on Zem, we continually ice a Tier 2 if not Tier 3 team in this event. Where is Crosby, he must be fresh, he looked fine and he's only played what 20 odd games in the last two years. Where's Iginla, where's Thornton, where's Toews, where's Spezza? Bet they all show up for the big Olympic stage. These guys are all spoiled prima ballerinas, I mean Prima Donnas. Time to suck it up cup cakes and represent your country and your fans like the Canadian Military continues to do. They don't get to pick their battles, just kit up and go.

We saw Team Canada play tonight in the Helsinki arena and have to say that this young team does us proud!! Looking forward to the watching the Can VS US game tomorrow, too! Go Team Canada!

No offence to the young and talented players, playing for Canada at this year's World Championships, but they are, for the most part a “Tier 2” Team Canada and I am disappointed once again at all the no-shows. I understand that the NHL season is long and grueling for some of these players, but I would like to think that, given the opportunity, when requested to attend and represent your country, our nations top players would step up. Nonetheless, we have a very talented and capable team of great young players who, if they aren’t our nation’s first choice for Team Canada right now, at least will be at some time in the future, our top choices. Still, I am optimistic. Let’s go Team Canada – “to you, from failing hands, we throw the torch; be yours to hold it high”!
