Is there too much violence in NHL playoffs?
Thu, April 19, 2012

Whatever progress the NHL had made in protecting players from unnecessary cheap shots this season has been pulverized in the first week of the playoffs.

The Penguins-Flyers series has been a mess, with players headhunting and brawling through the first three games of the series.

The latest example from the post-season saw Coyotes goon Raffi Torres send Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa to the hospital on Tuesday night following a hit where a hard-charging Torres left his feet, made contact with Hossa's upper body and head while the puck was going the other way.

What are your thoughts about the increase in violence so far in the NHL playoffs? Is it good for the game? Is player safety thrown out the window? Have your say in our forum.

This violence is a strategy to neutralize more talented players and teams. It adversely affects the game and has long-term health consequences for the players. I choose to not support such an endeavor and, like many others, no longer watch the NHL.

Hey Ken - If it's garbage hockey and you haven't watched it in 20 years why are you here commenting. If you haven't watched hockey in 20 years how could you have a relavent opinion?

Hockey has deteriorated to the point where I don't even bother with it. There is no respect on the ice any more. I have played hockey for over 40 years and what is happening now is not hockey. Its roller derby with sticks.

It was not always like this. Cheap shots were always rewarded with a good thrashing, and you didn't have the little guys running around getting away with that stuff. If the suspensions were consistent from day 1 of the pre-season to the end of the playoffs, this would not be happening. Shea Weber should have received 5 games, and guaranteed that would have reduced the cheap stuff. Now it will be done after the fact, and Torres will pay for everyone. No consistency.

NO, this is the same as it was years ago, only now the players are bigger and faster. With all the video replays it always looks much worse than it is. I am not saying there aren't any cheap shots, we all know they are and always have been. Think about Elbows Howe as an example, how many concussions do you think he caused. The referees are going to take flack in every game no matter what league its in, so lets get the ball rolling and play hockey.

It's garbage hockey. It's why I haven't watched NHL for 20 years.

There are too many wimps commenting on hockey. We don't need non-hockey aware people writing about what is going on in hockey. We need people like me, telling people like you the way it is. If you don't like my great game here's what you can do. Turn the channel, yeah grab the remote and do it or don't buy a ticket. Simple. Leave the game, fights, hits and violent play to us men.

Who comes up with this crap?? Hockey is a fast paced and violent sport, as is rugby, football, and some others. The so called "VIOLENCE" in todays game is far mroe tamer than it used to be, because we have way too many Princesses making up the rules. And the media jumps on the bandwagon. How disgusting. Think back to the Battle of Alberta glory days, or the BOS/NYR battles in the 70's Gimme a break. Go hug a tree you morons

bring back the tough guy. very simple do you really think the coward Torres would be hitting like that if he knew that someone was going to beat the crap out him for doing it. It worked that way for years now, the ref steps in says please don't hurt him and he is bailed out of course he is going to do it again and again. nobody seems to notice it is the wannabe's giving all the cheap shots Burrows, laperiere, torres let them bet beat up by real men you may not even see them in the league in a year problem solved as Don Cherry says have you ever seen someone (even the naysayers) get up for a coffee in the middle of the fight

The only difference between the NHL and the WWE - The WWE has BETTER and MORE CONSISTENT officiating.

Wise up Betman.

You're ruining a great game.
