Is there too much violence in NHL playoffs?
Thu, April 19, 2012

Whatever progress the NHL had made in protecting players from unnecessary cheap shots this season has been pulverized in the first week of the playoffs.

The Penguins-Flyers series has been a mess, with players headhunting and brawling through the first three games of the series.

The latest example from the post-season saw Coyotes goon Raffi Torres send Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa to the hospital on Tuesday night following a hit where a hard-charging Torres left his feet, made contact with Hossa's upper body and head while the puck was going the other way.

What are your thoughts about the increase in violence so far in the NHL playoffs? Is it good for the game? Is player safety thrown out the window? Have your say in our forum.

Fightin' words fire up NHL fans

Mr Jim Hickey, what the hell are you talking about, the subject matter is there too much violence in the NHL and your on some diatribe about Sundin and the Hall. Too many hits to the forehead my friend?
Pedro, 2012-08-19 09:08:06

Steve Simmons says Sundin should be a lock for the Hall of Fame. Being a lock doesn't help Steve, otherwise Paul Henderson would be in. The greatest traversty in the Charade called the Hockey Hall of Fame. It's political and that's a shame on those involved.A true Canadian Hockey Fan.

Nothing about this game is the same anymore.

Two minutes for "looking" Over half the game is mucking along the boards and there are more shots on the corners than on the net (gotta set up that cycling down low!)

Yeah. there's nothing like watching six millionaires fighting for the puck on the boards, like a bunch of Timmie Tykes for 5 minutes before the ref finally blows the whistle.

And hey let's not forget the loafers. Kings and Caps for example - ripped off their fans all winter going through the motions and suddenly they're Cup contenders while the even money guys are out golfing?

No wonder fans get out of their seats for the violence.

It's the only excitement they see in 60 minutes.

The problem with the NHL is two fold:

first and foremost the sad excuse for officiating, they're ruining the game;

Secondly, Brendan Shanahan has to go, he's a joke, period.

A player the likes of Torres who has had a history of "hitting to ruin" should be removed from the NHL completely and forever. The league has no place for "wanna be" players whos only reason for being to to attempt to destroy other more talented players' careers. This is not fair to those players injured by these head hunters nor is it fair to the fan. Fans pay good money to seetop rated players work their magic. A lifetime expulsion of someone like Torres for what he has done throughout his career may make other potential career killers think twice.

It's now confirmed - the NHL is a complete joke. Torres just got 25 games, and Weber for Nashville is asked to hand over some pocket change after slamming a guy's head in to the glass.

Go Jays!!!

I totally agree with Lynne, Katherine & Roy. The hockey skills aren't there and they try and make up for it busting up the other team.

I cant even bring myself to call hockey a Sport, or even a Game anymore! Its a blood-letting event on ice! Todays hockey appears to only require that a neanderthal be able to get around on an ice rink while wearing a pair of skates, massive, possibly maiming gloves, and carrying a big stick! Big stinking deal! Why not just forget the ice and the skates just pound the living daylights out of each other in the parking lot! What happened to the game of hockey that was so exciting to watch? To see team mates stick handling, passing and getting the puck past the goalie? Many of todays players are being rewarded for taking an opposing player out of the game. Many are hired for just that reason. They dont have to skate much, and they dont have to have any athletic talent except with their fists! What happens to all the young men who have their careers abruptly ended because of yet another concussion? Or who die early in life because of injuries deliberately caused by an opposing hockey player?

Lets get hockey back to what it once was and can become again: a GAME - of skill not intimidation!

Rick, using the "if you have not played you can't comment" is idiotic. The NHL needs to grow a set and get control over its players and the dumb things they are doing. Stupid and passion are two different things and right now stupid is winning.
Trent, 2012-04-20 23:16:11

You don't have to be a chicken to judge an egg rick.

Nothing wrong with the Torres hit on Hossa or Seabrook last year - there are consequences to skating with your head down (Hossa) and coming fast around the back of your own net looking backwards (Seabrook), both guys admiring their passes.

There's not a coach in the NHL, I'm betting, that wouldn't love having Raffe in their lineup.

And yes, I have played competitive hockey rick, not that it matters here.
