Your thoughts following skier Sarah Burke's death?
Thu, January 19, 2012

QMI Agency

Canadian freestyle skiing trailblazer Sarah Burke died Thursday in a Salt Lake City hospital.

Burke, 29, was critically injured Jan. 10 after crashing during a training run at a personal sponsor event in Park City, Utah. She was put into an induced coma after being airlifted to Salt Lake City but never regained consciousness.

Burke, a four-time Winter X Games gold medalist and pioneer in freestyle superpipe skiing, was considered one of the favourites for the 2014 Sochi Olympics, where the event would make it debut. She was a driving force behind the inclusion of freestyle skiing in the Olympics.

Send us your thoughts and condolences.

Sarah Burke's death very much shook me, and I feel deep sorrow for her family. The sport she was in, actually anything that involves skis, is a high-risk sport. And, it gets worse by each race. I did some work at the 2010 Winter Olympics, and it was gruesome to see that, on top of an already icy slope for the women's downhill, they kept on puring water on the slope. One, just ONE, skier, Ms. Vonn gave it a shot and won. But, at what price! Young people do not calculate a risk, and I could not believe that most of the favourites went down. There was, however, one German skier (I do not want to mention her name), who had a very high starting number (taken out of a head?) and saw that there was nothing to win for her that day. She did a beautiful run, smiled and at the finish she had a big smile on her face because she knew that, the next day, she would get her gold medals. And she did. This is a huge appeal on the organizers of ski races of all kind: there were already death in the ski businesses. Did you have to make an already "over-iced" slope even more icy? Is it your goal to have everybody ski on ice instead of snow?

Your shame lies here.

I wish the best to Sarah's family and friends dealing with this terrible loss. We truly have lost one of the best this wolrd has to offer.

What a terrible sadness to loose such a talented young athelete. I find it hard to believe that any athlete competing outside of their home country would not carry some sort of medical insurance either personally or through the federation they represent. It seems totally irresponsible that anyone would leave their country without adequate medical coverage

Sharing your pain. You do not walk this path alone and the story too closely matches the loss of my son almost four years ago. The induced coma, the organ donations, ICU, the loss of brain function, the decision. Wishing courage and strength to the surviving family and friends. Sarah is at peace and will want to be remembered through smiles, not tears. Wish I had the courage of my conviction and that we all fare well on this road.

Cowardicel; we saw personal cowardice with the ship captain Schettino this week, now corporate cowardice when Monster Juice's only response to Sarah Burke's death following this accident during training for their event is "no comment".

Sarah was an inspiration to girls and all kids proving to them that you can do whatever you set your mind and heart to! Sincere condolences and prayers to Sarah`s husband, parents and family. I will miss reading about her latest adventures in all the ski mags. She will not soon be forgotten!

This is a tragic loss for everyone for sure. Even in her death, she found a way to give more by donating her organs for some that may live many more years because of her generosity. I think it is also time for multi-millionaire family member Archie Bushfield to do the right thing and look after the cost of trying to save Sarah's life.

Did Sarah not belong to anything that would help with these medical costs. No insurance or what ?

Here here Laura G. The death of Sarah is a great loss to her family, friends and country. But her final gift to the world was being an organ/tissue donor. RIP Sarah, in your untimely death you have saved lives.
