What's your opinion of MLSE sale?
Fri, December 9, 2011

By ROB LONGLEY, QMI Agency

The Ontario Teachers Pension Plan has cashed out its controlling stake of the Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment empire — selling to a pair of media giants.

A story first reported by the QMI Agency on Thursday night was confirmed Friday morning at the Air Canada Centre.

After years of speculation, the majority stake in the parent company of the Maple Leafs, Raptors, ACC and more has been sold to an unlikely partnership of two of Canada’s communication giants — Rogers Communication and BCE, the parent company of Bell.

The deal sees Bell and Rogers buy and split 75% of MLSE shares for $1.32 billion. Construction magnate Larry Tanenbaum, who holds the remaining 20.5% interest in MLSE, increases his ownership to 25%.

Bell and Rogers represent TSN and Sportsnet, the No. 1 and 2 sports broadcasting powers in Canada, but they will call a truce and split the shares with so many lucrative deals to be spun off their union. It is believed that neither company felt it could afford losing out to its competitor, especially given the value of TV rights to the Leafs in this country.

What's your opinion on the sale of MLSE to both media giants? Have your say in our forum.

MLSE sale a done deal

Pragmatic, what a contradiction in terms, pragmatic, you are anything but sensible or realistic. I don’t disagree with nor challenge one’s rights to pen whatever they so chose. In fact I welcome the insignificant musing of all window lickers, such as yourself. Clearly you ride the short bus to your beloved Leaf games. The man did not care, who are you or Jake to decide if they are welcomed or not to voice said opinion, well articulated or not. Shame on you, perhaps you should consider hiding further in your on-line pseudo-existence and refer to yourself as “Impractical” from this day onward.

Pedro, the ONLY freedom of speech that you support is your own. Anyone whose opinions differ automatically fall into the category of ignorant. Look in a mirror.
Pragmatic, 2012-01-19 18:00:38

Jake, hope you have an enjoyable new years, one that is free of hatred and the opinion that yours is the only one that counts. The fact that I support the freedom of speech for others does not necessitate my taking anger management classes. You however need to crawl out of your butt and see the light my friend.
Pedro, 2012-01-01 15:57:38

Wow, ever consider anger management therapy Pedro?
Jake, 2011-12-20 18:55:25

jake, who died and made you the moderator. I have to agree with Geoff adn ricksbarngrill, who gives a damn! All Toronto Teams suck, so no bother there. The teachers made out like bandits and god knows Bell and Rogers have for years now. Given the ol "freedom of speech" think and all, I would presume you are the ignorant one who should take your comments elsewhere. Awkward.
Pedro, 2011-12-16 13:56:56

To Geoff and ricksbarngrill:

The answer to your question; a lot of people.

If you're not interested, what are you doing here. You add nothing to this discussion with a stupid comment like "Who cares".
Jake, 2011-12-11 09:46:15

Rogers and Bell say that now fans won't have to miss a minute of Leaf hockey. With my current Rogers package I have Leaf TV, Sportsnet, TSN and CBC, so I believe I can see every game now. The only thing that can change for me is how many dollars I pay for this - my guess is they'll find a way to pull more money from my pockets.

Consider what Rogers did with Jays baseball - most of the games used to be on the lower Sportsnet channel included with a relatively inexpensive package. Then they moved a bunch of games to an upper Sportsnet channel, and guess what - now you need a more expensive Rogers package to see all of the Jays game that you could previously get for less money.

Face it, Bell and Rogers are both a bunch of thieves and I don't like this deal for what I predict will be the impact on our pocketbooks.
Jake, 2011-12-11 09:42:06

Who cares? No one outside of TO cares!
ricksbarngrill, 2011-12-09 19:44:22

Its a good day for teachers, but I don't see how anyone else can get excited. Rogers and Bell will never be as 'friendly' as they are today. There will be trouble down the road in this unholy marriage. This will likely lead to the end of the CBC as well.......but that is for another forum on another day

Once again big corp split up what is called Canada so as to maximize profits on the middle class. Since when does it make sense that only oligopolies should exists in Canada. Way to go big corp, since no one can stop you why not eh?
