What should the NHL do about head shots in hockey?
Thu, March 10, 2011

The NHL is on the hot seat while trying to find a solution to cut down on the number of concussions and bring more respect to the game.

The latest incident, involving Boston Bruins defenceman Zdeno Chara taking out Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty into a padded arena stanchion, has players, fans and sponsors up in arms over the NHL's decision not to level a suspension and/or fine for the dangerous play.

Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby, the NHL's poster boy, hasn't played in more than two months after suffering a concussion in the Winter Classic on Jan. 1.

What can the NHL do about preventing concussions in hockey? Is it up to the players to show more respect in the game? Have your say in our forum.

No suspension for Chara

Hey hiker, that pic above is a still shot from one of the fastest games on two feet. If you ever played the game you'd understand how fast it is and there no time to place your hand accordingly like the picture shows. Also, because the guy is a physical presence out there due to his size doesn't not constitute him being called a neanderthal, it makes you look ridiculously uneducated.

Look at the pic at the top of the article. How can there be any discussion whether or not this is a blatent attempt to injure via a headshot is beyond me. Im just waiting for the day someone clocks Chara, and teachs this neanderthal a lesson.

I agree with Barry Moland. The only thing I would add is that if it is a second infraction, ban them from the league for life. The way this was handled smacks of Colin Campbell involvement. The league is becoming a joke and I don't watch anymore. Won't even go if given free tickets.

Head shots should be banned and can. Treat a head shot as you would a kick in a fight or a stick swinging - 10 minute major and a gross misconduct plus a 20k fine. That will teach the morons to be accountable for their actions. Chara may not have intended to hurt Pacioretty but he did. If I hurt someone at work I am responsible...

The obvious first step the NHL needs to do is hand out handy suspensions and/or fines to players that cause severe injury or harm, regardless of whether there was an intent to injure or just just reckless, careless hitting behind the play. The NHL doing nothing in these kinds of situations is the first problem. They have to learn to police the game, or as we see happening, people and agencies on the outside get involved.

Why is the violence, along with the calculated, deliberate attempts to injure so prevalent in the NHL and yet is conspicously absent in Olympic hockey matches? Kudos to anyone who has the courage to speak about about this. The bloodlust for violence has made me develop a total aversion to the game.

The NHL is looking to hard for an answer. It is sssoooo easy...suspend the player, without pay and regardless as to who he is (Chara or Gilles), the same length of time as the injured player. If it is a goon who causes the injury to a bonafide player the team is fined a substantial (read millions) fine. This would stop this foolishness.
Barry Moland, 2011-03-10 10:48:10

Suspend the offending player, and divert his salary to the injured player until the injured player is back to 100%, if that ever happens.
