What should the NHL do about head shots in hockey?
Thu, March 10, 2011

The NHL is on the hot seat while trying to find a solution to cut down on the number of concussions and bring more respect to the game.

The latest incident, involving Boston Bruins defenceman Zdeno Chara taking out Montreal Canadiens forward Max Pacioretty into a padded arena stanchion, has players, fans and sponsors up in arms over the NHL's decision not to level a suspension and/or fine for the dangerous play.

Pittsburgh Penguins superstar Sidney Crosby, the NHL's poster boy, hasn't played in more than two months after suffering a concussion in the Winter Classic on Jan. 1.

What can the NHL do about preventing concussions in hockey? Is it up to the players to show more respect in the game? Have your say in our forum.

No suspension for Chara

I think that I have been under a rock for over 40 years. Yes they took the gloves off to fight in the '60s when as a little girl my dad took me to see the Leafs. I had no idea until recently when I started looking at Hockey that players were actually dying. Hockey is a sport of skill not a killer venue. Is there an actual job description for these technical goons that are hired to harm players so that their team can win. What happened to Gretzky's style of playing? In memory of my dad sure glad he can't see any of the brain destruction today.

All I can say is that any player who hits another from behind is nothing but a wimp. Don't tell me you are going to fast what a crock that is. The other night Dion Phaneuf layed a solid body check on the penguin player! What's happened to good solid body checks? Answer - they are gone the way of wimps from behind!!!!

I said it before and I'll say it again after Shanahan's latest spate of doling out suspensions. He's and idiot and as long as he is in that role, things will never improve!

The lastest from Brendan Shanahan just goes to show you what too many blows to the head will do! This guy is a freakin idiot. How do you come up with a five game suspension to Andy Sutton who's elbows were in, but he's accused of taking an improper path?? Yet two days earlier, he gives nothing to Wojtek Wolski who's elbow on the jaw of Ottawa Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson 20 feet away from the puck, a hit that knocked Alfredsson out with a concussion, didn’t warrant any supplemental discipline. Landeskog, who Sutton hit was not even injured. I'm so pissed with SHANAHAN, what a freakin idot, corporate weeny, you need to go. You were an average hockey player and an even worse Discipline Chair. Fans and Players alike think you're doing a terrible job. the only person who is in favour of you're less than average performance is the that other weany, Gary Bettman. Your out of your league bud, stick with what you know, perhaps a sales job with your local car dealership like most of the uneducated washed-up retired thugs.

I have more of a general question about players that get suspended from playing for a certain time for waht ever reason, does their pay also get suspended during that time?
David, 2011-09-24 09:40:45

You are ignoring the problem if you do not address the equipment.
John Cameron, 2011-05-30 12:13:33

The most simple solution, to me, would be to enforcea rule akin to high sticking....a hit to the head, accidental or not, is an immediate 2 minute penalty....repeat offenders given game suspensions....these suspensions, to be served by the team as well....meaning the team has a suspended player, the team dresses one less player....thus making the team's management responsible of the on-ice actions of their players

Get rid of Bettman the dictator. Cant drink Coke on the bench what is with that? Dictators are no longer wanted in the world even less in hockey. Goodbuye Bettman.
