What would be the reaction to gay players in the NHL?
Fri, February 4, 2011

By CHRIS STEVENSON, QMI Agency

There will be a day, a historic day, when there will be an openly gay player in the National Hockey League.

A big part of that day will belong to Brendan Burke.

Fifteen months ago, the 20-year-old student-manager of the Miami University (Ohio) hockey team publicly declared his homosexuality, supported and embraced by his family, which includes dad Brian, the president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and his team.

A year ago Saturday, after just a couple of months of living in a new world unburdened by his secret, Brendan Burke died in a car crash on a snowy highway in Indiana.

It's hard to imagine the courage it took for a 20-year-old kid in the macho world of hockey to go public with the secret, to be at the leading edge in declaring his sexuality in an unfriendly culture.

What would be the reaction amongst the league, players and fans to gay players in the NHL? Have your say in our forum.

Burke's legacy opens door to gay players

Listen to me carefully Calgarydon, I am not fearful of anything period. What I don't need to hear is one's sexual tendancies, whether they are those intended by God or not. It has nothing to do with the sport, as articulated by many, it has no bearing, who cares, what does it matter, Stephane Richer of Montreal fame was gay, no one cared, he faded off and is a distant memory. What is your point Calgarydon, are you fearful, why don't you come out of the closet? I'll start, I'm hetero and proud of it. Before you respond, ask yourself, what does this have to do with sports and why would it be so earth shattering for another pro athlete to admit the wiring is wrong. My point was, while not professional hockey, one does not have to look far to find gay people playing sports, womens hockey, womens softball and the Calgary Flames but are a few examples.

What next, P.K. Subban is going to tell us he's black??

Hey Chris Stevenson, if you're looking for a big scoop I have a hunch you might be verrrrrrrry interested in men's figure skating and womens golf.

IT'S NOT NEWS!

and hetero proves my point that there is always someone who can't handle their fear.

You have to appreciate how difficult a decision it would be for the first active athlete to open up about their homosexuality. That person will be infamous their entire lives, not because of their accomplishments or their skills, but because they are who they are. They will be known only for that one thing, and it's something that honestly is nobody's business but their own. That first athlete will have to give up so much so that every other one that comes after him won't have to. It will be a heavy burden to bear. I truly hope somebody will have the courage to do it someday.

Someone here said it already, keep it to yourself, who really cares. Personally I just don't want to know if you are gay or not, just keep your sexual preferences to yourself instead of having to tell the world you like kissing men!

I agree with Jimmy.I could care less. This BS about needing to tell everyone, is starting to get ridiculous. I am proclaiming that I am straight, does anyone care?
Gary, 2011-02-04 16:05:52

Let em play girls hockey or, no pun intended, ringette.
hetero, 2011-02-04 15:18:51

I couldn't care less if someone, an athlete, an NHL'er, was gay. They'd have my support.

No issue at all. The biggest issue someone coming out should have is the hype that the media will make of it. For the individual, there will always be someone who can't manage their fear and will react badly.
CalgaryDon, 2011-02-04 14:29:34

You know, I don't give a rat's @ss if someone wants to hook up with a monkey, go for it, just don't flaunt it and push it in my face.

Do you play hockey and like men? Good for you. I don't care. Keep it to yourself and do your job. You wanna come out - do it once you retire. If you wanna come out as a player - go ahead, but prepare for the fallout.

Gay hockey players, straight hockey players. How about just HOCKEY players. Keep your sexuality to yourself.
