What do you think about the UFC staging a fight in Toronto?
Tue, December 7, 2010

By IRENE THOMAIDIS, QMI Agency

The UFC will stage its first fight in Ontario on Apr. 30 at the Rogers Centre, president Dana White said Tuesday morning.

White told media at a press conference at the Air Canada Centre that he expects the UFC 131 event will be the most attended of all time.

There is no word yet on who will be on the fight card.

The provincial government expects that a major UFC event in Ontario would draw up to 30,000 fans and generate up to $6 million for the local economy, including cash from hotel rooms rentals, restaurant meal expenditures and retail purchases.

What's your opinion on the UFC coming to Toronto? Should mixed martial arts be allowed in Ontario? Have your say in our forum.

What a bunch of junk...it's legalized brutality. The only reason Ontario has accepted it is because of the money they are losing to other provinces. I don't consider this a sport at all. I will never ever watch it, I don't like it and in reality I think it's just plain crap.

Anyone who compares MMA to gladiators or dogfighting is unacceptably ignorant. No person in this sport is forced to compete in it, and the sport is not a lethal death match like in a cheap action movie.

Forgive me but aren't those the most despicable parts of your outrageous comparisons?

But please, go back to assuming we fans are all bloodthirsty monsters about to eat you dogs and cats

Putting a referee in the ring with these knuckle-draggers is like hiring a lifeguard for the shallow end of the gene pool.

I cannot wait, CAN'T WAIT. When do tickets go on sale? I'm a woman and I love MMA so much. Can't wait.

I look at all the negative comments here, and I can't help but laugh. People coming out after a fight and beating the crap out of an unsuspecting person is not a byproduct of introducing MMA, it's a byproduct of alcohol and being a jackass. The same people will be found doing the same thing after a Leafs/Argos/Jays game, or after a night at the bar.

Why not? Better than fighting in the streets! Also, it's real. Not that fake Wrestling leagues. That crap is soap opera for men.

I enjoy MMA. My wife hates it, and doesn't understand the attraction. Even I struggle with comprehensively explaining the appeal of watching two men attempt to impose their will on one another in hand-to-hand combat. But the fact is I find MMA extremely exciting. If that makes me a "neanderthal" or "brain-dead" in some people's eyes, I can accept that. But to somehow connect MMA with the deterioration of modern society, or suggest MMA fans are nothing more than thugs who enjoy attacking innocent people is completely absurd and misguided. In a world where religion drives much of the violence around us, and basic things like stable, engaged parenting are in short supply, it's laughable that people choose to identify a sport as some kind of evil indicator of society’s impending doom. Please open your eyes people. I might be “brain-dead” but at least I’m not ignorant.

I agree with most of the negative comments in here. We're on a fast path back to the days of the Roman Coloseum, and every time one of these new "sports" succeeds in getting approval. they will then push the enveolpe a little more next time around. it's a gradual process, but only the brain-dead see this as a viable "sport."

Just what we need...more violence. And nothing is more of an extreme blood sport than this. What does this add to our society? Human cock fighting. Jeez, you fans should seek mental health care or get a life.

Maybe uncle Dalton will be happy when someone gets murdered in the ring...all for the sake of bringing a few bucks into the province. How low can we sink as human beings?
Dudley, 2010-12-07 21:22:43

Just more violence, got to wonder what the people who watch this crap do after the event. Beat some unfortunate people out on the streets. No wonder our society is going down the tubes.Nothing but a discusting blood sport.
