Who is your pick for Canada's male and female athletes of the year?
Thu, November 25, 2010

By STEVE SIMMONS, QMI Agency

In some years, winning the National League MVP award would mean Joey Votto would be a slam-dunk to be named Canada's Athlete of The Year. Just not this year.

Other candidates include Jonathan Toews, Joannie Rochette, Sidney Crosby and Alexandre Bilodeau.

As we near the end of the year, let the arguments begin. Who are your male and female Canadian athletes of the year?

Does MVP mean Joey Votto is Canadas Athlete of the Year?

Georges St. Pierre. Two title defenses in 2010. Pound for pound the greatest fighter on the planet today. After simmons dismissal of MMA on TSN (Sunday), I am not surprised to see his name absent from this article.

Virtue and Moir. For sure.

Georges St. Pierre (GSP)has proven himself as one of best athletes on the planet. MMA is mainstream and it is about time that it is recognized as such in Canada. It is too bad that such a humble champion cannot get the proper praise. Look at the names above, important, but notably absent, GSP!

Joannie Rochette?!?! Are you kidding me?!?! Feel good story of the year...YES! Canada's Athlete of the Year....heck NO!!! Ok, it must have been hard to perform as she did after finding out her mother passed and to come away with the bronze...but after that...it's pretty slim pickin's. My vote would be Jonathan Toews. His performance during the Olympic hockey was great (also being named the Best Forward of the tournament), and it carried over into the NHL Playoffs, leading his team to win the Stanley Cup and winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as the MVP of the Playoffs.

I am definately picking Joannie Rochette because she battled through heartache and still gave all she had to not only entertain the world but to show excellance which brought her to an Olympic Bronze. For this Joannie Rochette is more golden than any Olympic Gold medal.

I would vote for Alexander Bilodeau. When he got his gold,it changed not only the attitude of Canada as a nation....but all the other athletes came together and gained confidence. The rest is history....a true national hero. Also, filled with class.
