Who is your pick for Canada's male and female athletes of the year?
Thu, November 25, 2010

By STEVE SIMMONS, QMI Agency

In some years, winning the National League MVP award would mean Joey Votto would be a slam-dunk to be named Canada's Athlete of The Year. Just not this year.

Other candidates include Jonathan Toews, Joannie Rochette, Sidney Crosby and Alexandre Bilodeau.

As we near the end of the year, let the arguments begin. Who are your male and female Canadian athletes of the year?

Does MVP mean Joey Votto is Canada’s Athlete of the Year?

George Rush St. Pierre all the way. Ya even though he "hurts and beats people up" lol.

So, all the GSP bashing, ignorance must be bliss. Hockey has plenty of role models for certain, but there is also no shortage of fighters and poor very poor role models. I bet every mom wants a little Sean Avery or Todd Bertuzzi running around their home. NHL and the NFL have player trying to permanently hurt the big stars. Why do you think Wayne Gretzky had David Semenko? He was an enforcer who beat people up when they tried to hurt Gretzky! As for the comment below, GSP only has a handful of competition. Clear evidence of a complete lack of understanding of MMA.

GSP and there is not even a consideration for second because the gap is so large. Go GSP.........

GSP for hurting and beating people up! For today's society, he is the perfect role model for our young children.

Being good at, or even the best in a sport that has only a handfull of competitors is no big deal. GSP, Rochette...no way. Toews..maybe. But Joey Votto took the MVP honors in a sport that has tens of thousands of people trying for his job. (yeah, I'm counting every kid who didn't make the majors as well) Plus, he's playing a real sport, not some fringe novelty act. This year, it has to be Votto for Canada's Athlete of the Year.

While all of the athletes listed have accomplished great things in the past year, Canada has only one athlete who has represented her country at the world class level in two totally different sports. That athlete is Heather Moyse of Summerside, PEI.

AFter setting the track starting record at many of the World Cup bobsled runs this year, she went on to do it again with her pilot, Callie Humphries, at the Winter Olympics while winning the Gold Medal.

She then switched back to rugby, where she scored 7 tries at the World CupTournament in England last summer. This was following on her performance at the previous World Cup in 2006 where she was both the top scorer and the Most Valuable Player for that tournament.

In my opinion, her performance as an athlete is far superior to any of the other athletes mentioned; success at the world level in two sports in the same year. No one else has come close to that performance.

St. Pierre is not even a athlete, how can anyone vote for him. How much skill does it take to hit or kick someone in the head, let's get real just look at the big ears these guys get and the concussions.

GSP all the way. Not only is he probably that purest athlete that Canada has ever produced he is also bringing recognition and growth to Canadian sport like no one ever has. He is the pound for pound greatest in the MMA world at the moment, a gentleman, a role model to our youth and a great ambassador for our country. Not to mention the world champion. While I know that most Canadians would disagree because of our affinity for hockey but I could argue that GSP is the most famous Canadian athlete ever, and yes I mean bigger than Gretzky. The guy can't even walk down the streets in the Philippines without being mobbed. Gretzy was huge here at home and a notable in the U.S. and a few other countries. GSP is a global phenom. Who else in Canada can make that kind of claim??

GSP for athlete of the year, hands down. Not only because he one of the top 3 pound for pound fighters in the world, not only because he has an 8 fight win streak or 2 successful title defenses in one year, but because he does so in such a dominating fashion for over 25 minutes straight and appears to be only breaking a sweat. No other candidate on the list has that high level calibre ATHLETICISM as GSP.

GSP...doesn't get the accolades he deserves (at least in our country) for being the great athlete he is...he is the Gretzky of the MMA!
