Who is your pick for Canada's male and female athletes of the year?
Thu, November 25, 2010

By STEVE SIMMONS, QMI Agency

In some years, winning the National League MVP award would mean Joey Votto would be a slam-dunk to be named Canada's Athlete of The Year. Just not this year.

Other candidates include Jonathan Toews, Joannie Rochette, Sidney Crosby and Alexandre Bilodeau.

As we near the end of the year, let the arguments begin. Who are your male and female Canadian athletes of the year?

Does MVP mean Joey Votto is Canada’s Athlete of the Year?

Who cares if hockey is "Canada's game"? This is about best Canadian athlete, not "best athlete representing a Canadian sport". Personally, I am proud of the way Georges St-Pierre has represented our country around the world through his class and dignity. In his weight class, the man truly knows no equal and his exploits in MMA will someday be mentionned along the same lines as Manny Pacquiao in boxing or Tiger Woods in golf. You don't have to believe me, but it would serve you well to have some vision beyond the truths that you so desperately hold dear. MMA is a growing sport, and who knows where this will go? How many Canadian athletes besides Gretzky could ever lay claim to being the absolute best at his craft? Crosby? Really?!? On his best day, Crosby couldn't lace Toews' skates.

Cameron Vermullin, a little known Atom hockey player from Kingsville, Ontario. He exemplifies sportmanship, great team spirit and a true love of the game of hockey. He scored a break away goal last week that was simply amazing. Nothing fancy but every bit as brilliant. That's my pick!

GSP : there is no discussion. GSP is hands down the athlete of the year. He is easily to be considered the Athelete of the decade 2000 - 2010. only being 29 yrs old and coming into his prime fighting years over the next 6 years, he may also be the athlete of the decade for 2010 - 2020. Anyone who bashes MMA or GSP is plain ignorant of the facts, or willfully blind to the obvious. These people still say at the start of every year "the leafs will make the playoffs" - no sense of the real world around them.

Paula Findlay for doing so much, so young in a very competitive sport.

Jonathan Towe, gets my vote.

He won it all in 2010 in the sport he plays. PLUS>>> this is a Canadian award, hockdey is Canadas game. GSP and his headbangers, werent even allowed to play in Ontario till a month ago.' Gretsky, etc. not known on the streets of Phillipines... WHO cares?

I betcha, The Boogy Man could kick the snot out of St. George.

George St Pierre....i honestly don't think the media realize what an amazing athlete this guy is. Joey Votto had a great year, certainly many of our Olympians deserve consideration however i vote GSP.

Joey Votto wins 2010 Lou Marsh Award. The honour -- decided by a panel of sports editors, reporters and broadcasters -- is given annually to Canada's outstanding athlete by the Toronto Star.

Opportunity Missed

Job well done Mr.Votto...you were crazy and now you’re not and you managed to not win anything for you’re efforts. All the while we have some young Canadian men who won gold Medals and who earned Stanley Cups and some won both. A feat that has not only never been equaled it has never been done on home soil. Shame! Jon Toews was voted the most valuable forward at the Olympic Games, won a gold Medal for his country, played for and earned a Stanley Cup and was also given the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP. But I guess baseball is more important to Canadian sports reporters. Who are these clowns? Time for a changing of the guard I would say. These clowns are the same guys who would rather visit the Leafs dressing room and be friends with the GM or Coach than be given the boot for writing the truth about a terrible team that is poorly coached and horribly managed. I guess Joey Votto had more hardships to overcome on his road to mediocrity than Jonathon Toews had to overcome on his road to unequalled heights. Remember what he accomplished this year has never been done before any may never be done again.

Next year The Toronto Star will have to do better than this. Unless the buds win 3 games in a row then you can guarantee Dion Phaneuf wins this honour..it's a joke
