Does NHL need to change all-star game format?
Wed, November 10, 2010

By MIKE ZEISBERGER, QMI Agency

Remember back to those frosty days of road hockey when the two stud players would alternate in the selection of the kids on hand to make up the teams?

The NHL all-star game could soon be following suit. Sort of, anyway.

In the most significant change to come out of the NHL’s GM meetings in Toronto Tuesday, the alteration of the all-star game’s format likely will be implemented for the Jan. 30 contest in Raleigh, N.C.

While the league would not release details, one GM suggested a concept will be adopted in which:

a) Fan voting would still determine the six starters for each team.

b) The NHL's hockey operations department would put together a list of candidates to appear in the contest.

c) The two captains of the respective all-star teams would then select players from the aforementioned list to fill out their rosters, regardless of conference.

In other words, no more East Vs. West or North America Vs. The World.

The selection process reportedly would take place during a live TV event on all-star weekend.

Do you think the NHL needs to make changes to its all-star game format? Are there other issues the NHL should deal with? Have your say in our forum.

Changes coming to all-star game?

I am as well disgusted with the hit the way it went down and far more disgusted with the NHL how they are handling this matter. I also believe that although the players, like Chara, are professionals and masters of their craft and they constantly try their best in the game and to follow what allowable and EXPECTED by the NHL commission and of course what is expected from them by the biggest extremes hits instigator, Gary Bruce Bettman, the NHL commissioner who in my view he clearly shows that he things Hockey should be the same as the Gladiators fights in the ancient Rome Colosseum, all based on his comments and the past 10 years history. I will call it the "Gary Bruce Bettman syndrom" which has put and will be putting all the players' lives at risk until he is gone and the rules altered.

Yes, hockey is an aggressive and a rough sport game, but it is a WWF sport, neither an ancient Rome gladiators fight. It is a sport to be enjoyed by all fans in as civilized way possible, NOT IN A SUCH AGGRESSIVE WAY FOR A KILL OF THE OPPONENT!

I have always enjoyed playing the and watching sport since I was little, but although it was rough with fights involved, it was a more technical more civil of a game until Gary Bruce Bettman arrived in the scene!

What the hek, we all hockey fans remember the seventies and early eighties when admiring while at the same time (politically driven) hated the Russians and their technical game whenever they were playing with our North American teams! Yes there were fights but not one to kill each other although we hated each other so much for reasons not known to us, except we hated Russia!

Yes, my friends and I are disgusted with the rules that allows and encourages hits like this and its alike (remember Bertuzzi's hit 7 years ago to the day and its alike?). We started a petition to get our true technical hockey game back and get rid of the rules that allow extreme hits like the one upon Pacioretty and YES we will stop watching any NHL games and watch only CHL games until these rules are changed. Make a difference and support our petition to get our game back at : https://www.facebook.com/pages/Hockey-Fans-Disgusted-with-NHL-Commissions-Promotion-of-Violence/195222117165687

You're not going to see bodychecking or fighting at the all-star game. The league would cancel the game before that because no one wants to see their star players injured in a meaningless game.

The old format is about as interesting and about as fun as a self administered root canal.

The new wrinkle while novel won't make things better on ice.

Seeing there's no checking

or intensity anyway, here's a few ideas...

Why not have the NHL stars play the Canadian National Womens team or a Top Prospects Junior team?

The $$$ raised from the gate can go to support our

olympics or minor league associations.

I think it should be the Stanley Cup Champions against a team consisting of an equal number of players from both conferences(east/west). In a three game series in multiple cites, starting in the Champs arena. The other two games in a lottery pick(names in a hat, picked by captain of SCC at start of season) to decide the next venues. Players stats to pick players.best of the best. allow full body contact, like the game was meant to be played.A show of full skill.

why need to change this format . this year it would be nice to see the stamcoses and crosbys overskin score a lots of goal, so why change all of this.
ross jones, 2010-11-10 16:51:03

Someone has definately taken a few too many pucks to the head. The allstar game is already lame as it is. Players skate like they're 95 years old, there's no checking, but most of all no heart.

There is no incentive for anyone to win.

They should do what MLB has done and the winning team gets home-ice advantage in the playoffs.

i personally think it needs to be changed but not this way. i would like to see the stanley cup champions play an all star team like it used to be. can you imagine multi million dollar players being picked and you are the last two to be picked what a kick in the face. remember the school yard when you were the last one to be picked. its like nobody wants you but they have to take you. what would the players think being picked number 41 and 42. pretty imbarassed.. stupid suggestion by brendan shanahan. i hope they rethink this suggestion but i really dont care cause i dont watch it anyways. like doug maclean says i will be in florida so i dont care.
