Do you agree with the Hockey Hall of Fame inductees?
Thu, November 4, 2010

So, what, exactly, makes a Hall of Famer?

Well, when it comes to the Hockey Hall of Fame, nobody really knows.

The selection process for inductees is so secretive, the protocol could have been drawn up during the Cold War. The statistical criteria players need to meet for potential induction are more closely guarded than the Colonel’s secret recipe.

Therein lies the rub.

Debatable HHoF inductees

From your post:

"...Gretzky and Lemieux would be better players and not have to worry about carrying guys on their backs or being sliced and diced while making plays."

Lemieux and Orr had to endure that I agree, but Gretzky? - give me a break. If you watched any hockey from that era you would know that every other player's meal ticket couldn't be touched. If a player didn't abide by that rule, they could face one of Wayne's cement head protectors (i.e. back when they didn't have to worry about the instigator rule). From all the games I watched during those years, I could never understand why opposing players wouldn't crush Gretzky with a legal hit when the many opportunities arose - see above for the explanation. Lemieux and Orr would have been great in any era, including today's game, but I don't know that Gretzky could have the same success today. Don't get me wrong - he would be a very good player in any era also, but certainly not with the same career stats when it was all said and done. This can only be debated to no definitive conclusion unfortunately.

With the speed and increased skill at all positions in today's game, I think Crosby may be the greatest player ever to "lace them up". Ovie has equivalent skills, but not the same passion for winning that Crosby has.

Regardless of protocol, the person(s)responsible for not inducting PAT BURNS Should be banished forever!! That was clearly a HUGE unforgiveable mistake. Idiots!!! one and all.

Puuuh leeez Wilson...

Gretzky - Lemieux 1 and 2. (with Orr and Mr.Hockey right up there )

Both played in the great hook, hold, slash and bash NHL. Granted the goalies weren't as good as now.

But in the New and improved NHL Sid the Kid and Alexander the Great can't crack 120 points.

Yeah everything's bigger and better now, especially the Chara's, Gill's and the other huge palookas on D, but Gretzky was the real deal.

No bones - 212 points then, and how much would he have now ?

Couldn't tell me Sid or Alex hasn't been surrounded

on their teams the last couple of years.

Things being equal with the

improvements in equipment and personal fitness regimens Gretzky and Lemieux would be better players and not have to worry about carrying guys on their backs or being sliced and diced while making plays. They would be able to have played longer.

Don't get me wrong, I like Sid the Kid and Alex O, they're the best now, but they also have it a bit easier with the new rules.

All the people elected deserved the honour.

What I can't understand is how these morons couldn't bestow the honour on Pat Burns while he is still around to enjoy it.

Kinda like the Habs and Boom Boom. You'd think people would learn from major screw-ups ...

"....added another 93 goals and 121 assists in 225 playoff games. Noted as a "clutch" player, he was able to score key goals when the team most needed them. He scored 5 playoff overtime goals, third only to Joe Sakic's 8 and Maurice Richard's 6. On top of that he had 17 playoff game winning goals, good for fifth in the all time history of the NHL."

I can't believe that there are still people who question stats like Glen Anderson's. For someone who wasn't good enough for the first line his accomplishments are even greater....not less.

Just cause he did it in Edmonton instead of Montreal or Toronto....

The WHA was not an inferior league. Bobby Hull and the Jets thumped the USSR National team. The mighty Canadiens could only tie the club team Red Army. Anders Hedberg was much better than most of the stiffs in the HHOF. Alex Mogilny was a better player than Doug Gilmour.

Add the list of non-members some long forgotten names like Lorne Chabot, referred to as the best goalie not in the HOF. Also add checkers like Claude Provost should be there but are overlooked

While I agree some of these choices are debatable, you can't judge players from the 50's and 60's (i.e. Duff & Pulford, etc.) by today's standards. Back then 20 goals in a 60 game season probably equates to about 35-40 today in an 82 game season. You also shouldn't be evaluating a defenseman by his career point totals.

Should Pat Burns not have been inducted before he dies??? Obviously, these people lack common sense and good judgment.... He will be inducted one day, and don't tell me they couldn't bend the rules in such a special case! And, of course, the inevitable induction of Chris "Prongoon" will tarnish the presence of truly skilled players like Bobby Orr and the great talent supplied by the Canadiens over the years.

Wayne was not that great.Do you think he would have got all those pointa if it was not for is protectors. Also he had Messier,Anderson,Kurri etc
