Does Rick Rypien deserve to be suspended?
Wed, October 20, 2010

By Reuters

Vancouver Canucks forward Rick Rypien is expected to face a National Hockey League disciplinary hearing after he confronted and pushed a fan during his team's 6-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday.

The incident occurred in the second period as Rypien was heading to his team's dressing room after being assessed a double minor penalty for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct penalty.

Footage of the incident, which has already been posted on YouTube, showed the fan applauding before Rypien pushed the fan in the chest and attempted to grab him before being pulled away by a teammate.

What should happen to Rypien? Have your say in our forum.

Hockey is a joke. The media will feature two guys fighting almost every other day. Yet they play the entire olympics with no fights. There will now be a rule that says fans must be seated at all times and no clapping if a player is ejected.

Of course he should be suspended. This is a no brainer. If you hit your boss at work do you think you would keep your job? The fans pay this clowns salary. If a fan attacks the player it's totally a different case. I say suspend him for a long time and set an example to those players that forget that they are being paid a handsome salary by the fans who should be able to heckle the oppposing team. It's part of the game

I am a canucks fan, and i feel he should get the year, no less maybe indefinate. The fan, even if he DID call rypien a few "colorful metaphores" was never touched by the fan. rypien, should be on his knees when he meets the NHL, and even lower when he PERSONALY appologises to the fan and buys him season tickets for 3 years... only THEN should he be concidered to reinstatement.

Sorry Rick, i love to watch you fight, but on the ice, not fighting the very people that put that large amount of cash in your wallet!

Check that idiot for steroids and HGH. Oh, wait, with that waste of space Bettman in charge, the NHL's drug policy is a friggin' joke, in my humble opinion.

Settle down kiddies, got your panties on too tight. Of course he'll get hit big time. Shoulda done a real number on the chirpin' loudmouth. He'd get the same from the NHL. Too bad it wasn't a pansy in Torawnaa.

It's part of the fun of going to a game. The fan should have to pay more for getting to physically meet one of the players. Rypien should get a bonus for adding value.

Rypien is a gutless coward. He should get 10 games for his gutless sucker punch on a player who was defenseless and restrained and 25+ for grabbing the fan and thinking he was a hero. Sadly, Vancouver will not even miss this talentless clown because he is just that. What a complete disgrace

After those fans were placed in another location after the incident, they looked pretty disgusted. How to turn fans away from hockey...lesson101...see Rypien incident. 20 Game MINIMUM suspension!!.

Nobody knows what the fan said to the player. A player doesn't react like that without being provoked. I don't care what the video shows - the fan had to have said something.

The league needs to make it so fans and players are never that close in a game situation, when tempers flare and people are ramped on adrenalin.

And can we please bury the word 'irregardless,' it is incorrect. The proper term is 'regardless.'

I Agree with Dwain and John Smith, he should never play in the NHL again.

ED, I seem to recall the fan was not a canucks fan, so obviously he wasn't all that obnoxious right?

A message needs to be sent and no matter what the fan said or did, a player cannot attack a fan and should only act in self defence if attacked by a fan (yes I think going to a team mates aid would be self defence as well).

What is next, players will be allowed using guns on the ice?
