Does Rick Rypien deserve to be suspended?
Wed, October 20, 2010

By Reuters

Vancouver Canucks forward Rick Rypien is expected to face a National Hockey League disciplinary hearing after he confronted and pushed a fan during his team's 6-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday.

The incident occurred in the second period as Rypien was heading to his team's dressing room after being assessed a double minor penalty for roughing and a 10-minute misconduct penalty.

Footage of the incident, which has already been posted on YouTube, showed the fan applauding before Rypien pushed the fan in the chest and attempted to grab him before being pulled away by a teammate.

What should happen to Rypien? Have your say in our forum.

The last time I checked cheering and clapping were allowed at any sports event. Rick Rypien should have gotten 20 games for absolutely horrible behavior, not only to his team as well as to the NHL

First, there was no assault. So no lawsuit. Also a suspension is deserved. Touching fans is a no-no. But Minnesota should also be fined. There is a tunnel that is put up for the opposing teams that are playing so that no one can taunt them or spill beer on them, ect...ect... So the nhl players union should be putting in a complaint. They must also have some responsibility.

The guy is an idiot, he should be banned for life, the fans pay there money to these loosers, this guy just assaulted his boss he should be fired!!!! With no fans you have no job you bonehead!!!!!

Last time I checked the fan didn't lean over the railing or make any threatening gestures towards Rypien. It doesn't matter if he was calling him names, if someone calls you a name on the street are you allowed to go after them? And don't forget, Rypien did this after sucker punching a guy held by the refs and then fighting the refs to get away. 6 games is a joke when they give a guy 2 games for a obscene gesture

He is lucky it wasn't me, he would have been gone 20 games and fined 100000.00.

Be a pro fans can be knobs, but it is a game fans are off limits.

the player is the ONLY person at fault here. being booed or taunted is what fans for the other teams do. He is a PROFESSIONAL hockey player GROW UP and play the game your paid to play.

Rypien was lucky to get off with 6 games. What he did was totally bush league...which is where he should be playing. No player should have any kind of physical contact with a fan regardless of what is said and regardless of the emotional state of the player....and yes, grabbing someone by the shirt could be interpreted in a court of law as assault. It will be interesting to see if the case makes it to court.

Definitely faults of all 3 parties. league, player and the fan.

The fan asked for that kind of attention if he is going to lean over and taunt a player with his emotions high. I can definitely say a majority of society would react the same way the player did if we were in the same frame of mind.

The player should know fans are going to react like that against the visiting team. Most importantly the league needs to learn like everyone else. we shouldn't be allowing fans to get that close to players especially to the visiting team?

Anyone else think the fan should be banned from future games until they learn to respect players as humans too and not feel it their right to heap abusive language on them? Just a question.

I hope that they sent him to his room without dessert as well. Maybe they should make sure he brushes his teeth 3 times a day too... Yes, I am mocking Bettman, come on will, put someone in charge that has a pair and is not afraid to tell someone to take a hike. The Canucks getting a $25000 fine, ummm even the lower paid players get that in a game, big deal.
