Which Canadian city deserves an NHL team? Sun, January 30, 2011
In a player poll released by CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada and the Players’ Association before Sunday’s all-star game at the RBC Center, 53% of over 300 players polled supported a move by the league back to Quebec City.
Asked what Canadian city deserves a franchise, Winnipeg was a distant second at 25%. A second team in Toronto was at 16% and Hamilton wasn’t on the map with only 5% of NHL players supporting a move there.
The players wouldn’t support getting rid of fight anytime soon. A whopping 98% maintained fighting shouldn’t be banned and 66% are for keeping the controversial instigator rule in place.
Should there be a seventh NHL team in Canada? If so, who should get it?

The GTA area makes the most sense, then there will actually be an NHL calibre hockey team in the area.

I think Toronto would be the ideal location.
They've been begging for an NHL team for 44 years.

There should be another 1 or 2 teams in Canada, but not at the expense of the TAX payers....
Also keeping politics out of hockey....

Perhaps it is time to seriously look at an all Canadian Pro Leauge, minor pro using existing pro teams eg Victoria plus larger centres without NHL teams. This could develop a pro model and be a fall back for failing US based NHL franchises.

Perhaps the question should be about organizing a minor pro Canadian Professional Hockey Leauge, with existing minor pro cities, eg Victoria plus some current larger non-NHL cities and see how that works. Would make for a perfect tv contract on TSN, the Score etc.

The economic climate in the NHL is very different than it was when both the Nordiques and Jets moved to the U.S. I'd love to see franchises return to both Winnipeg and Quebec City. However, in terms of priority I would rather see another team in Southern Ontario where there is a more concentrated population base and better opportunities for corporate support.
