Which Canadian city deserves an NHL team?
Sun, January 30, 2011

In a player poll released by CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada and the Players’ Association before Sunday’s all-star game at the RBC Center, 53% of over 300 players polled supported a move by the league back to Quebec City.

Asked what Canadian city deserves a franchise, Winnipeg was a distant second at 25%. A second team in Toronto was at 16% and Hamilton wasn’t on the map with only 5% of NHL players supporting a move there.

The players wouldn’t support getting rid of fight anytime soon. A whopping 98% maintained fighting shouldn’t be banned and 66% are for keeping the controversial instigator rule in place.

Should there be a seventh NHL team in Canada? If so, who should get it?

The last thing we need in Quebec City is another NHL team, just so the cultural idiots can turn it into another "nous contre les autres" as they are always prone to do. In fact, they can't involve themselves in ANYTHING that doesn't have a language/cultural label attached.

And sure as hell, if they ever did get another team, they'd try and staff it with as many francophone players as they could without regard to actual talent (much as they do in the Federal Public Service). Just as long as most of the team speaks FGrench! And that is a stupid way to pursue any sports franchise.

Les Canadiens discovered that a long time ago, and now even their captains can't speak the language.

Name me the last great francophone player to come into the league?

Taking that route - and they will - will ensure they become bottom feeders.

Oh yeah, about paying to build or modify the rinks in Quebec, Winnipeg, and the GTA... I say allow the governments to do it. My reason is simple - In most cases I, as well as most everyone else never see the difference our tax $$$ dollars make. Hospital waits are long, and we have the same complaints about infrastructure, and education today, as for the last 40 years. With all the excess and wasted money our governments both federal and provincial have blown, they can at least help entertain the populus - if only for the uproar a decision either way would cause.

Not only a 7th, but an 8th, and 9th. Quebec City, Winnepeg, and a second team in Southern Ontario.

It makes good sense. The population in Southern Ontario would support another team, and I think enough people can be drawn to Winnepeg and Quebec if they decide to go with a regional marketing format.

Since both cities had teams before, there is a hardcore group of fans and marketed properly, casual fans that will come out for a game or two. Regional Marketing to companies and corporations should be able to fill the suites depending if the prices are not ridiculous.

Those cities are NOT Montreal, Toronto, or New York, and the pricing will have to be fair to fill the rinks up. At least there won't be give aways or 2 for 1's to get butts in the seats.

Bettman really doesn't have much choice anymore. Several American teams are just floating on the edge financially, and the pipe dreams of the huge blockbuster american TV deal

has never panned out. And expansion to Europe? Really now. The NHL would have to be bulletproof financially before they could even think of it. Yo Gary - expand to the great white north. It'll be the best for the league. We'll even teach you how to say EH!

YES there should be another NHL team in Canada but Gary will never let that happen because then Canada would have another chance to bring home the Stanley Cup...

Winnipeg, Quebec and Hamilton all deserve NHL teams. What should happen is the 3 worst attended US franchises should be moved to those 3 Canadian cities. Here in Canada those teams would draw more fans on a regular basis than they are currently drawing in the US even when their tickets go for $5 bucks... Unbelievable how those teams cannot get fans to come out to the games even when the tickets are practically free. I wonder, when that happens how many Canadians are at those games? Probably more than you think... Bring more NHL teams to Canada!

wow slam way to beat a dead horse over and over again. I mean really you had to have poll to figure out canadians want another team, what is this a second great social project? as for all the"toronto needs a real team" people get over yourself, that joke was only funny for about 5 min 10 years ago. If you cant be realistic about the situation then stop dreaming all you GTA people, it will never happen, the NHL will go to win and qc and 10 other us markets before a team ever goes there, and even then win and qc are such long shots as it at this point. The NHL is trying to build its image and its market not your own ego, don't act like children because you don't get your way.

I would be very happy if there was another NHL team in Quebec.
Remi, 2010-09-24 21:44:16

To: Joe Antolich, Where do you get your #'s from? MTS Center has more than enough lux boxes, also room to expand the 15,000 seats.

Hamilton is off the radar, Wpg is next, only need the rubber stamp. If you are basing Copps sell outs on the 1980-90's get Real. Please do your home work before posting something you know nothing about..

Any city that can support a team financially on their own should have one. I can't see spending public money to put a crappy product into a market that can't support it, while other industries suffer.
blake, 2010-09-24 18:49:06

That's an easy question. NHL should be in Saskatoon.
Roger, 2010-09-24 16:48:03

no more enough team now
