Can Kaberle and Wilson clear the air?
Wed, September 8, 2010

By LANCE HORNBY, QMI Agency

Tomas Kaberle made it clear Wednesday that he's in control of his fate with the Maple Leafs and his relationship with Ron Wilson -- not his well-meaning father.

In his first comments about Frantisek Kaberle’s shots at coach Wilson, the Leafs and Tomas’s supposed dim future in Toronto, the younger Kaberle said his father was just sticking up for him, though not in the public manner he’d approve. Frantisek, a respected player, coach and father of two NHLers, popped off to a Czech hockey magazine when the Leafs didn’t trade Tomas as expected.

But Kaberle echoed Wilson’s belief that a sit-down before training camp should settle the matter.

Do you think Kaberle and Wilson will be able to clear the air this season? Would a trade be in the best interests of Kaberle and/or the Leafs? Have your say in our forum.

Kaberle finally speaks

Wilson is a terrible coach and Kaberle is so good he has led the Leafs out of the playoffs for years. They are completely useless, dump them both

Kaberle/Wilson "dispute" is minor and mostly a media creation. To my mind though Wilson might not be in a Laffs' uniform any longer than Kaberle. Coach Ron is an odd duck who is going to have his hands full this season trying to figure out: ways to free up Kessel from being double-teamed; who to send over the boards when the team desperately needs a goal; where the truculence comes from when you have Bozak, Grabowski, Mitchell, Kadri, Versteeg, Kaberle, Fingers, in the line-up; and, where to send Komaserik, Beauchemin, Fingers and Schenn if they play like they did last year.

Take a look at the Laffs roster of forwards. On paper too little NHL experience, not enough goal scorers, too many lacking in size. Last year the Laffs went 0-7-2 and the season was over by Novemebr. This year they could be eliminated by Christmas unless they strenghten the forward lines.

Kessel trade is the worst in Laffs' history. When the Laffs make a mistake (like $3.5M for Fingers or multiple draft picks for Toskala) it is obvious and becomes clear in a very short period of time. If you disagree on Kessel, keep this comment in mind and we'll talk again around Christmas.

Not much laffing around the Laffs.

Of course they can clear the air.Likely hat happened is that poor Thomas, being a veteran didn't like coach Wilson getting on his case last year about being too soft in his own end and letting players to the net.He likely whined to Daddy about this and Daddy lipped off to the media.Thomas will have some splanin to do!

Let's be realistic here. Kaberle will start the season with the Leafs simply because Burke could not cut a deal. Any contending team is already at, near (or, like Jersey,) over the cap and simply would not give up prospects or even a top 6 forward for a guy who'll cost them $4.5 million and then become a UFA at the end of the year. Those teams are all going to make the playoffs with or without Kaberle, so why spend the money (and give up valuable resources) now when they can make a pitch at next season's trade deadline when most of his contract will have been eaten by the Leafs. And at that point, Burke will have to take what's offered (likely a 2nd round pick) or face losing him for nothing, and that wouldn't look good on Burke's resumé.

Non-contending teams are hardly going to give up dtaft picks and/or top 6 forwards for someone who wouldn't be the difference in them making the playoffs, and then see him walk at the end of the season.

So, the Leafs have him whether they (read Wilson) like it or not, so naturally they have to cast a positive light on the matter. But they have two too many D, and since Fingers won't be dealt (who'd want him?), they are going to have to make room by trading someone else, or face a dressing room revolt.

Blah Blah.. doesn't matter .. just media selling papers or lack of ..... It's like they kept saying he would be trade because of the rift or for sure because the leafs have to many 'D' .. well media has been wrong many times... but then they need to do something to sell papers...
