Should Jason Spezza stay in Ottawa?
Tue, July 20, 2010

By DON BRENNAN, QMI Agency

Jason Spezza wants to remain a Senator.

Speaking publicly for the first time since his season-end meeting with general manager Bryan Murray, the team's No. 1 centre and highest-paid player made it clear his preference has always been to stay in Ottawa.

There's been plenty of debate on the issue of Spezza's mindset since Murray told the media Spezza informed him he wouldn't "object" to being dealt.

"At no point did I ever demand a trade," Spezza said Tuesday at his annual charity golf tournament, being played at Greyhawk. "I've seen a lot of what's been written and talked about ... at the end of the year I was pretty emotional and upset ... I was upset at us losing, and I was upset at a bit of the response I got.

"I talked to Bryan and (said) I read the newspapers, I see every year there's trade talk about me. I just basically told him, if you want to move me, you can move me. Obviously, I had (a) no-trade clause coming up on July 1. I want to be here, but if he thinks it's best for the team for me not to be here, and the city, then he can move me.

"He told me he wasn't going to move me, and to be honest, I was happy about it, because I like being here in Ottawa."

Do you think the Senators should keep Spezza? Have your say in our forum.

I like to watch the Senators play with my Spezza sweater and a glass of warm milk..I get scared and run away when he gets checked...just like he does

What a sad excuse for a human being you are lol. Many years ago Mark Twain wrote down some immortal words that fit you to a T: "better to keep one's mouth firmly shut and only appear to be an idiot, than to open it, thereby removing all doubt."

Now scurry down to your parent's basement and dream up the next "snappy" response. Or should I have said "sappy?"

...you can literally see the tears running down Gary's face as he pounds his keyboard in frustration...lol..shouldn't you be playing ringette with Spezza and Inge Hammestrom???..lol...hurry back and don't forget to make that grrrr noise...lol

I see where any intelligent discussion with "lol" is out of the question. Mark Twain had the perfect advice for your type "lol": "Far better to keep one's mouth firmly shut and only appear to be an idiot, than to open it, thereby removing all doubt."

Argue with yourself, doofus.

Gary O...as sad as they come..Spezza is not a choker...hahahahaha..always one left who can't face reality and sits with his sweater and his oversized foam hand cheering at home on the couch...lol...Gary O...very manly

A lot of criticism can be directed Spezza's way, lol, but calling him a "choker" is way overbroard. I'd bet anything you're a Leaf fan and if that's true, anything you say goes in one ear and out the other.

And please, come up with something more original than "lol" - it suggests a juvenile wearing baggy pants and a cap on backwards.

he better stay put..nobody who wants to win would ever take him..greatest choke-artist of the last 30 years..never shows up for any big game

Exactly, bigberg. I meant to mention that in my earlier post when talking about Murray. Spezza was a pending RFA at the time that big contract was awarded! Not a UFA - a RFA. Which meant he takes what the Sens offered or sit. As for some team offering him a $7 million deal in an offer sheet, Murray then could have either matched the offer or take the multiple # 1 picks and run with them. It would be interesting to know what those picks would have yielded by now.

First off, it isn't the media's job to be friends or support the players. It's their job to CRITICIZE the players.

Second, Jason says a lot of things but he's never carried them through to their term. He's said he is going to improve his game then he does a blind back pass to Gonchar, at least THIS year Gonchar will be on his team!

The impression I get from Spezza, hearing him speak, is that of a spoiled, self-entitled man who treats life and hockey as a big joke. Giggling and laughing at the most mundane question, he simply does not understand that the craft of hockey in this town is SERIOUS.

We will not win with him, no team will unless he is a second line center. Too high risk high reward and teams have keyed in on this aspect of his game.

Spezza is a dud, and at 7 million a year a very expensive one!

The only problem I have with Jason is the fact he got that 7Mil.way too fast. His salary alone is what keeps the team from upgrading and if he put out like the Captain all would be well.
