Does Gary Bettman deserve his $7M salary?
Mon, July 12, 2010

QMI Agency

Commissioner Gary Bettman's pay package increased to $7.23 million US in 2008-09, the SportsBusiness Journal reported Monday.

While his pay rose just 1.7% from the previous season, Bettman's compensation has almost doubled since his pre-lockout total of $3.77 million.

Bettman's pay ranks behind MLB commissioner Bud Selig ($18.35 million) and NFL boss Roger Goodell ($10.9 million).

Given that other sports leagues in North America pay their top boss more, do you think Bettman is adequately compensated for his work leading the NHL? Have your say in our forum.

He's an arrogant, off-putting, self-centered loser presiding over the worst managed major professional sports league in North America. He insists on trying to cram a sport down the throats of a market that has clearly rejected it, and with good reason. He locked players out to try and keep salaries under control, only to see them further spiral out of control. And he's completely oblivious to the stark reality that most of the franchises in the league are struggling because the brand of hockey being played is bored, uninspired, and almost completely lacking in any real skill (so-called rule changes to help the skill cause notwithstanding.)

If he deserves $7 million for that, I deserve about $50 million for providing plants with carbon dioxide when I breathe out.

This guy has hate sites all around the internet not to mention petitions all over the place for him to leave and yet he persists on staying. I can't stand the guy and his salary is a bloody joke. I think the integrity of this league is jeopardized with this guy and I've believed that since the first draft he was part of. Don't like him, never did. NHL would be way better off without this guy.

People deserve whatever amount they could get.If the owners are willing to pay it.Good for you Gary.Lots of jealous people it seems.

Notwithstanding the hysterical comments of many Canadian hockey fans, Bettman will continue as commissioner of the NHL with a nice fat pay check. Why? Because he is doing exactly what the NHL owners want him to do. Specifically , the NHL is trying to catch up to the big three (NFL, MLB, NBA). This will only happen if the NHL has a truly national US presence, otherwise it will never get that long dreamed about US national television contract. That contract is where the real money is. If it ever happens, the NHL will no longer be the poor cousin of major sports leagues in North America. Retrenchment back into small Canadian markets at the expense of the US sunbelt would adversely affect franchise values (Canadian ones too) and forever cement the NHL's status as a second tier league.

I think Gary should get paid more than any other commissioner. Not because he's good at his job, or the fact that he's ignoring Canada. But because if he made $20million or more, the calls for his firing would be loud and clear. Gary is short, funny looking, and american. All three traits suck!!

Yes, he's done very well building up hockey in great hockey cities like Phoenix, Nashville, Carolina, Miami, Atlanta. Kids in those towns traded in their basketballs for hockey sticks. What a useless tool!

Buttman (yes Bon Cop, Bad Cop got it right) cannot get Southern US states interested in hockey no more than you can sell the NBA to Canada. Is the NHL truly better off with 30 teams? I believe we've diluted the pool of talent with hacks that can barely skate. Time to trim back to 24 viable teams. Buttman won't hear of it of course.

bob writes "Salary cap? Oh sure, the Leaf's cup is just around the corner now!" and in that statement I read the desire to go back to the "good old days" when spending was spiralling out of control and only the richest franchises - all 5 of them - never worried about what they spent.

Lord knows I'm no fan of Bettman, but the cap was an absolute necessity requiring proper scouting, drafting, signing. The Leafs had none of that for far too long which is why they are where they are. Not Bettman.

Or would you rather have the baseball system where 4 or 5 teams sign whoever they wish, where there is NO universal draft, thereby allowing the better Japanes, Caribbean/South American etc players go where they wish. Which isn't the Kansas City's of the world. In Steinbrenner's obituary column they say he "won" 7 World Series. No, he BOUGHT 7 World Series.

Or maybe you want to emulate the NBA which allows collusion among the players, Bosh, James etc in Miami, but God help them if the owners tried to restore some semblance of balance.

No, Bettman has many many faults - but bringing in the cap is not among them.

NO Based on the joke he is and what and how he has treated Canada with respect to expansion. What can you say about a man sorry, person who will spend millions of dollars to keep expansion out of Canada. NO NO NO. When is someone going to say enough and for our own pro hockey league in Canada so we can stop being used by jerk-offs like him.
Brian, 2010-07-13 10:51:59

he needs to GO far far away where he can't screw up the NHL anymore.... he is no where near a 7 million dollar man, I wouldn't even give him a single dollar for what he does. what a joke and the fact it has doubled since the lock out which was all his fault to begin with really bugs me, esp when I have to pay what I pay for hockey tickets now.
Babs, 2010-07-13 10:44:10

This guy is an insult to hockey anyway. He's arrogant at best and does not fair well to a Canadian game...sure we need US based cities to get the league interesteing and of value, but we don't need is arrogance. His stubborness to admit he failed in many US cities further adds.

So the quetiond oes he deserve to make top salary as are some of the athletes ..NO! Time to go Gary!
