Does MMA have a future in Ontario?
Wed, February 17, 2010

ANTONELLA ARTUSO, QMI Agency

TORONTO -- Premier Dalton McGuinty has dealt a stunning blow in the Ultimate Fighting Championship's battle to come to Ontario.

"It's just not a priority for us," McGuinty said Wednesday. "We have other things on the go right now and we'll stay focused on those."

The premier's comments indicate that despite the incredible popularity of mixed martial arts in this province, Ontarians will have to continue to travel to Quebec or elsewhere if they want to see a live match.

The federal Criminal Code prohibits prizefighting but individual provinces can choose to exempt sports such as boxing and mixed martial arts.

According to a consumer services ministry spokesperson, Ontario would need to be convinced the UFC is safe for the public and participants before it would make amendments to the Athletics Control Act.

Personally, I think UFC is nothing more than the exploitation of people's thirst for violence.

But if fighting in hockey and boxing are okay, than banning the UFC is hypocritical.

How can mcguinty say it is not a priority to looking into bringing MMA and the UFC to ontario. Is he too busy finding new and different ways of screwing us around? Finding new ways to line his pockets with needless taxes? Why can't he just get an independent study done on not only the issue with safety in MMA compared to other sports like hockey or boxing, but also on the impact the UFC has done to montreal's economy as well as vancouver's after their UFC prmotion. After reading the study, then make a decision.

Tom could you please provide an example of some almost being killed in the UFC or any other major organization. More athletes are carried out on stretchers from the NHL than MMA, i have never seen anyone taken from the octagon by stretcher. The worst injuries i have seen is a broken elbow cause the fighter was stubborn and a dislocated shoulder. Do not discredit these athletes by saying it isn't a sport. These guys train harder and endure more abuse than most other athletes. The amount of skill required for this sport is unbelievable, you dont like it dont watch it.

Does our premier have any clue whatsoever...our province continues to decline in economics, and ontario has been hemoraging money with little optimism...having UFC and other organizations come to ontario would be like having a professional hockey team with the lack of financial support....they would come into town and create work, and income for the cities they host their events at....McGuinty continues to let down ontarians and his agenda appears to be clueless and with no direction, other than collect more money from the taxpayers.

Of course the last thing our economy needs is more money. Let's not bring anybody into town and sell-out our stadiums. Good thing we didn’t get the 2008 Olympics. Can you image all that money.

Let's vote out this imbecile and bring in somebody who has a clue.

What a clueless moron.

Dalton is a total clown...the cash he was too stunned to take from the UFC will be stolen from us with another liberal tax hike

Good! Glad! This is a total farce and I hope Canada never allows it. This is the most violent (so called) sport I have ever seen. It has no place on TV in the first place. NHL is not even close to violence in UFC. I'm disgusted to even see it on TV. NHL and headshots are one thing, fighting a guy and breaking limbs or nearly killing him is beyond humanitarian. UFC should be banned outright and stay that way. This sport is almost the return of Gladiators. People have to be sick in the head to watch and get entertainment from this. I can understand this in the USA because they are known to be involved in violence where ever it may be.
Tom, 2010-02-17 16:23:04

The NHL (hockey in general) right now is more violent. Criminal code, what!? It's ok to elbow someone in the face in a rink. But for the UFC it's not. Come on...

Biggest douchebag politician ever, this wimp can't make a decision to save his life unless it involves coming up with more ways to tax us. Can't wait to get rid of this guy next election.

what an idiot!!! How much $$$$ would the UFC make Ontario in places like Ottawa, London, Windsor, Hamilton and Toronto? Hey, at least we've got the HST to be happy about, right??
