The Montreal Canadiens are holding a news conference to announce a major change in management. Reports are circulating that Bob Gainey, the team's general manager since 2003, will be stepping down.
Gainey's future in doubt?
i see you can follow and understand a topic very well. are you so obsessed with the Leafs that you can't stop talking about them even when the topic has no relevance to that team? you are pathetic.

The Habs today have 2 solid lines when they're healthy, 2 good goalies who may even improve, a premiere defenceman and 3 other pretty solid D guys.
Not bad for blowing up the team and going back to the drawing board in July 09.
The Bulldogs have talent and are supporting the Habs with players due to injury.
They won the Calder Cup last year and may well do so again.
What has never been addressed is enough character guys role players and bangers.
For me this could have been done prior and this is where I think Bob Gainey failed.
When Les Canadiens finished first 2 years ago, everything fell into place for the team at that time. They had a good run, there was no reason to think that it couldn't continue. But the wheels fell off last year with almost every single young player taking steps backward and this has continued this year.
The lack of solid character and role players probably had as much effect on the collapse last year as did the Lecavalier trade
talks and the war of the Captains. No one was able to
stand up and unite the team.
Souray, Streit, Komisarek, koivu, Kovalev, all gone with nothing in return. I think it would have been good to at least get something for the free agents. Anyone of them would have brought back a good player in return that still may be with the team now.
Also why give up on a player such as Francois Boullion who played far bigger than his size and had a heart to match?
I hope Pierre Gauthier has learned and matured while being in the organization. As GM of Les Canadiens - he will have to improve the team to meet expectations.
With the trade deadline coming I hope we can bring in a player or players that can help secure a playoff spot and maybe make some noise by winning a round.
But I really hope that we improve the team over the next year or two to the point that Les Canadiens will be favoured to go deep or win the cup, and will remain there for a long time.

I have liked Gainey since his playing days and I think he did the best he could. Like all GMs, some things work out and some dont.
The GMs first trade should be Price (Halak if he must instead), Kostitsyn brothers and Yannick Weber, to Tampa Bay for Vincent Lecavilier.
Salary cap for this year would be ok with that trade, probably have to dump 2 or 3 million next year.

Who wants to talk about the Habs when we're starting to plan our Stanley Cup parade in Toronto?
