Have the Flames become a better team through trades?
Tue, February 2, 2010

RANDY SPORTAK, QMI Agency

Less than an hour after playing in the Calgary Flames 3-0 loss to the Philadelphia Flyers Monday night, Olli Jokinen and Brandon Prust were bound for Broadway, dealt to the New York Rangers in exchange for Chris Higgins and Ales Kotalik.

It’s the second swap in as many days for the Flames, who have just one victory in 11 outings and have fallen to ninth in the Western Confernce standings.

On Sunday, Dion Phaneuf, Fredrik Sjostrom and defenceman prospect Keith Aulie were dealt to the Toronto Maple Leafs for forwards Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman and Jamal Mayers, as well as defenceman Ian White.

Did the Flames become a better team with their recent trades? Have your say in our forum

He brings in a parcel of Leafs who are so steeped in the culture of losing that they don't know hockey continues well on into April and on. This guy makes Mad Mike Milbury look like Sammy Pollock!

I think they should either get a new coach or bring in some players from the minor leagues, because the way CALGARY is playing there not going to make the playoffs.

I have never seen a photo the the coach smiling. He seems much too serious.

Actually, Calgary did much better with Daryl Sutter (the GM now) as their coach.

However, I think these Sutters are stuck in the past and, without sounding mean, seem to be hicks.

They traded Phaneuf out of desperation for 2nd, 3rd and 4th line players (Hagman, Stajan and Mayers), as well as for White (who is pretty solid).

They also gave up Sjostrom (sp?), who has looked better with more ice time with the Leafs.

As well, they gave up the young, propect defenceman, Aulie, who could be a pretty good one.

Sutter sold low and Burke sold high.

A couple of seasons ago there was talk about Jokinen to the Habs.

I used to see him a lot playing for Florida and I'm glad that did not happen.

As for the guy who is obviously confused about Jarome Iginla, Iggy's always been a solid team guy who could put up numbers, and on occasion drop'em to make a point. Iginla's is one heck of a hockey player and a class act. World class!

the lames are totally screwing this up. dion is the most intense player on the team and one of the most in the league. for a team thats lacked intensity since it was last in the cup, very bad move. i agree w/these posts about iggy that guy needs to step his game up and take over. and flames one more thing quit getting rid of guys who can score, since you struggle with that. cammaleri has 25 and 50 this year whyd u dump him?

wake up --Ed-- the sutter era of hockey is over. gone are the type of teams that the sutters played for, they seem to be living in the past and trying to impose their style on a game that has passed them by. it will be years before the flames minus the sutters are in contention, they gave up their backbone by trading away speed and smarts for big and sluggish, reghre and iginla are expendable

No better, both Sutters are better equipped to manage the old style hockey, not the new faster mode of play. Created their own monster, now need to slay it. Better to move Iginala while he has value on the market. He is waiting for a player to feed him, not make plays himself. Needs to wake up most games. Kipper our only true star

I guess time will tell if things get better. A deal with the leafs and the rangers at least shows the willingness to try to remedy the team. One could look north and see all the bonehead dismal contracts Lowe has signed. One question that needs to be answered is what happened to the team on paper they were pretty good. Also didn't the flames give up draft picks as well to get No jokin jokinen

Neither trade in my opinion are good.

Can't he pick a real hockey team to trade with. We sent out 2 really good players for not so good players in return. BAD MOVE!

Agree that time will tell regarding trades. More importantly watching the game last night I just felt the Flames lack intensity and getting that second or third offensive try on a rush. It seemed that Philly had little trouble shutting down the Flames offence. Yet at the other end it seemed Phillies offensive forays were much more prolonged with 2-3 chances per rush being common. I think for some reason the Falmes just lack prolonged intensity right now, especially in the offensive zone.
