What's your opinion of the Maple Leafs' trades?
Sun, January 31, 2010
The Calgary Flames shipped Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and defenceman Keith Aulie to the Maple Leafs in exchange for forwards Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and defenceman Ian White.

Later Sunday, goalie J.S. Giguere from the Anaheim Ducks for embattled goalie Vesa Toskala and overpriced forward Jason Blake.

Burke is a real joke the Kessel deal proves it.The guy isn't going to score 30 this year. The Laffs in last place.Get rid of Burke.

It's about time... we'll miss Hagman but success is expensive in this league.

Thumbs up to both trades - the simple rule in dealing players is that the team that gets the best player - wins the trade - in both cases - the Leafs Win!

Big hearted Ian White is too small to be a first stringer. Jamal "I'm good in the dressing room" Mayers was an enigma who did nothing on the ice and in the dressing room asked to be traded. Little Mattie Stajan was such a nice guy that every opponent couldn't wait to get the chance to face off against him. A real nice guy and a real nice 3rd string cente. Jason was just paid too much for what he was contributing which was next to nothing. Hagman is a loss to the Laffs because the guy did his job well. He'll fit into Calgary's plans nicely.

Vesa is an adequate backup goalie who was thrust into a role far beyond his limited capabilities. Wouldn't talk or listen to Goal Tending Guru (GTG) Francois Allaire. Vesa just seemed to accept that when on his knees he couldn't stop a rising over the shoulder shot. Didn't seem interested in a remedy at all.

In summary, Lafs traded 2 2nd string wingers (Hagman and Blake) a 3rd string centre (Stajan) a 3rd string defenseman (White) and a back up goalie (Vesa) for...

Phaneuf. A mean sob and a true top six defenseman. He's a beast so Wilson get out a chain and beat him to get him going on his off nights.

Giguere. Just has to have made the goaltending better for the Laffs. He has seen his best days but his worst days are much better than Vesa's best days. The other two throw ins will probably never see daylight but the best player in all of this is Phaneuf and Burke showed some cajones to go out and get him.

Lafs are better off with these two players.

All Burke's moves have been good except the Kessel trade. Kessel isn't a Mats Sundin type. Kessel has limited leadership qualities, he avoids the heavy going and is a streaky scorer. One first draft pick and a second pick maybe but TWO first draft choices was too much.

Finally the Marlies last place standing bodes ill for the Lafs. They will not make the playoffs for a few more years.

And by the way Burke why haven't you dumped the overpaid Fingers, the underperforming John Mitchell and my long time Laf favorite Alexei Ponikarovsky?

In a nutshell, The Burke solved a couple of things that were question marks for this summer.

He had to make a decision on his second goal tender. Done. JS Giguere it is.

He had to make a decision on White who has been getting top 3 minutes this year. Done. Dion it is.

The Burke took on some salary for next year but he would have had to do that anyway on his above two decisions.

Add 12.5m to his salary cap. Bonus? Giguere is only for 1 year.

He also added Aulie, who is supposed to be a top prospect.

He got rid of:

Blake; 4m, too much for his production and thought to be untradeable.

Hagman: 3m, worth every dollar.. but smallish and streaky.

So technically he has added a 1a/1b goalie and a top 4 defenseman for a total of 5.5m

Assuming White would get his raise to probably around 2.5m, he replaced Toskala (4m) with Giguere for 3m.

The question is. Will Dion live up to the potential he was showing before the last couple of seasons? At 24 and with the ice time he will be getting in Toronto, my guess would be yes.

So the Toronto defense lines up as

Phaneuf

Beauchemin

Kaberle

Komisarek

Gunnarsson

Schenn

Finger (If he isnt banished to the minors)

Exelby UFA this summer

The real question will be who is playing forward on Tuesday?

Stajan, Hagman, Blake and Mayers. All gone.

You know Mitchell will play. But who else? Some happy Marlies today.

And who is Freddy Sjostrom anyway.

Cheers

They gave up an awful lot to get the big under performing defenceman. When you move the bulk of your seasons offence (over 40 goals this year) you're clearly pulling the plug for the year and thinking of the future which, ultimately, is the right thing for the Leafs long term. Phaneuf will help protect the young Leafs next year when Kadri, Hanson, Bozak and the like play a full season for the ever re-building Leafs. Phaneuf clearly has talent to be one of the very best elite d-men in the league and hopefully it weill come out in TO. As a long suffering fan who has tried to quit them and can't, hopefully long term it will work out for the Leafs but in the short term, the Flames certainly got the best of this deal.
akapipe, 2010-01-31 20:04:51

WOW. I expected one or two of em to go but not this many. Can't hurt --- but I'm doubtful that Phaneuf will have the impact Burke is betting on.
mike, 2010-01-31 20:04:01

good trade providing we are able to rid of komisarek or beauchemin. this is now the challenge. sign pony - he's a potentially 30 goal scoring 6'4" LW which is hard to potentially come by. Do that and get an allstar centre (Marleau?) and with Khadri up next year, the leafs will definitely be challenging for a playoff spot. Burke is not done yet!!!!

Giguere for Toskala and Blake--great move. Phaneuf for Stajan,White,Mayers and Hagman---we were robbed
