What's your opinion of the Maple Leafs' trades?
Sun, January 31, 2010
The Calgary Flames shipped Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and defenceman Keith Aulie to the Maple Leafs in exchange for forwards Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and defenceman Ian White.

Later Sunday, goalie J.S. Giguere from the Anaheim Ducks for embattled goalie Vesa Toskala and overpriced forward Jason Blake.

Let's look at it by the numbers first... after 55 games; Calgary gave up 28 points and got back 108 - for a team that needs added offence it makes perfect sense. That's 1.96 GPG vs .50. So that's 53 goals for Calgary by the end of the season and 13 for TO. Calgary just added a min of 2 goals a game. By any measure 108-28 and 53-13; TO is at the losing end of either a very lopsided NBA game or a typical Stamps Argos game. Note to you die hard TO fans... just watch how Phaneuf just doesn't know how to skate the extra stride to get to the puck in the corner ahead of the opposition. Now that you've read this you'll see it for the next 3 years - or till Burke trades him when he sees how lazy he is.

Hard to say. Phaneuf has definitely more upside than anyone acquired for him. BUT... the core of the Flames team had just suffered 9 straight losses. They've been dumped in the first round since '04. Sutter must have concluded that a change needed to happen to get into any real contention. Long term the deal my be better for the Leafs. But, since Calgary has to enter a rebuilding stage of their own before too long, maybe they were willing to take the risk for success in 2010?

Wouldn't you be miserable playing for a coach who never smiles.

I've never seen Brent Sutter smile - seems to take it all too seriously, as if it's war.

I don't see any downside in these trades for the Maple Leafs.

They're a 29th place team, so what have they got to lose.

At worst, Phaneuf is mediocre and Giguere is mediocre.

At best, Phaneuf becomes an all-star again and Giguere shares duties with Gustavsson until the Monster can hopefully take over in a few years.

NONE of the Leafs that were traded will ever be an NHL all-star. Phaneuf already has been one and could realistically be one again.

Like I said, there's nothing to lose.

You never get anywhere if you don't take chances.,

I don't like Burke and I din't like Blake but, I think this will be a great trade for Toronto and Calgary too! Calgary because they get Ian White, Toronto because they got rid of Cancer Blake.

Imagine Iginla, Stajan and Bourque. Then Jokinen, Hagman and Conroy or any number of other Flames,m look out NW if this does not kick start the Flames then they will be the Leafs of the West!

The only worry I have is that Phaneuf reminds me a lot of a guy who now toils in Florida.

Is Phaneuf a poorman's Bryan McCabe or is McCabe a poor man's Phaneuf?
Kory Fraser, 2010-01-31 22:39:34

Leaf Nation. Your problem is Brian Burke. Get rid of him and you'll be on your way to respectability.
Ross, 2010-01-31 22:25:29

Being from Calgary, I've seen enough of Phaneuf to tell Leaf fans that they now have the two most over-rated defensemen in the league. He can't skate, won't go into the corner after the puck first, constantly is out of position, will not fight and oh yeah, makes $6 million+/year.

The Flames much like in the Gilmour deal (15-years ago), got nothing more then a handful of magic beans.

A salary dump for Calgary going forward (Jokinen and his $5-mil/yr will also be gone next year) and perhaps something else for the Leafs? - Do they flip Phaneuf in another deal or since he's still pretty young, does this mean they now move Schenn?

Funny that Flames players obviously hate playing for Sutter and Sutter also couldn't get anything out of Phaneuf. Funny in that Keenan was fired for the same poor results from Phaneuf.

Not too many comments from Flames fans, eh? If the Sutters could not get the best out of Dion, what makes *anyone* think that Ron Wilson can? Dion has been -- OK -- and that's all. He's prone to significant defensive mistakes and can take himself out of position wanting to make a big hit. Better this year than last, he is expensive for what he is. Sutter opted to open up cap space ($4M as of July 1) to look for a more equitable distribution of work duties and offensive talent.

Good luck Leaf fans - Dion will give you lots of flash, when you're not biting your nails off from his latest mistake. He's fun to watch though for sure!

Methinks Calgary wins now, Toronto "might" make out OK down the road.

2 streaky forwards, 1 washed up role player and an over-achieving undersized d-man for 1 blue chip prospect, 1 penalty killing forward and a d-man once projected as the next Chris Pronger. Yea. It's worth the risk!
