What's your opinion of the Maple Leafs' trades?
Sun, January 31, 2010
The Calgary Flames shipped Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and defenceman Keith Aulie to the Maple Leafs in exchange for forwards Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and defenceman Ian White.

Later Sunday, goalie J.S. Giguere from the Anaheim Ducks for embattled goalie Vesa Toskala and overpriced forward Jason Blake.

My ham for your eggs. Dion Phaneuf is the Leafs' new saviour. Hey before that it was Jason BLAKE and then Phil Kessel. Who's next? The Pope? No, wait! It may be Kovalchuk!

Are some people asleep? These two trades have seriously upgraded the Leafs. Relax, relax. No, they won't win the Cup in June. No maybe not next year either or the next...but down the road these 2 trades have significantly improved their chances. I don't care where Phaneuf was in the hearts of Calgary fans. I don't care that Giguere was a backup to Hiller. Most are riding J.S. already about him being 32! What! Does anyone remember Curtis Joseph and Ed Belfour? They were stud goalies well into their late 30's. The Leafs get a goaltender of Conn Smythe quality for NOTHING. Burke and his management team gave up nothing. Bottom line is that these two will excel in Toronto. The Monster will finally have a quality person to emulate or even call a mentor. Phaneuf will help imporove the play of Beauchemin, Komisareck and Kaberle. The Leafs defence is set for a number of years. Jeff Finger might be the guy to go next off the blueline next. We all know the forward units of the Leafs need significant improvement. In one day, Brian Burke eliminated the "sometimers" from the Leafs lineup. Nothing wrong with them as people but under the word Leaders... I can only think of Ian White as having those qualities. You build a championship team from the goal out first...then across the blueline...then down the middle...then fill in the small parts. It just may be that Burke and company have the building blocks half done. Now it is clear that the focus is on the forward units. Big time help needed there. I know it. You know it. But when those needs are addressed combined with an improved D and the tandem of J.S. and the Monster are stopping pucks will there be anyroom on the bandwagon? And by the way, the best penalty killer on any team is the goaltender. Toskala was in net for most games the last two years. Chances are, the Leafs PK just improved. Oh yeah, Burke addressed that as well with the addition of Sjostrom. Hmmmmmmm....isn't he the guy that said he would play his heart out for the Leafs? Yes he is. And for quite sometime, the Leafs haven't had too much of that in the lineup. To Burke and company: I anxiously anticipate your next move.

Hmm...... Hagman, sure he's expendable. WHY White? This was the only promising player the Leaf's had to build a top contending team with. I'm totally miffed!!! This is another bad, poor trade for the Leaf's. Why couldn't they pair up White with Phanuef? That would have been dynamite. With trades like these, the Leaf's will never, NEVER have a chance at developing

a solid notable team, which Burke is preaching!
Tony, 2010-02-01 21:37:36

take four slugs off a last place team and trade them for phanuef, what idiot wouldnt do it in a second,of coarse you would and having dion lurking around the blue line looking for prey sure keeps the oposition honest
rob, 2010-02-01 20:06:22

phanuef to toronto for that group of losers, hell every team could have put a better pkg than that on the table for dion, youd have to be an idiot to think this wont help toronto, all the other gm's should feel much shame ! keep your head up eastern conf

Burke was all talk at the start of the season when most of us knew he was talking up a losing team. But the 2009/2010 Leafs were worse than most dared to think. This trade now cements another Toronto loser for 2010/2011.
Iluvminden, 2010-02-01 19:27:39

These trades will help the buds. Leafs get 2 players that will really benefit from a change of scenery in Phaneuf and Giguere, and ship off mostly castaways.

Burke will have cemented

the backend of his team, and while Kessel needs help,

Kadri is not far away and Burke will have $$$$ to spend on forwards. Things may finally be looking up.

As a Habs fan, I'm wondering what my GM is doing to help out my team.

After all the losses of good players through free agency and getting nothing in return, when I see teams in the same division bringing in quality players I have to wonder....

Andy V., 2010-02-01 18:30:58

This was an act of desperation.Burke just gets worse.
Geoff, 2010-02-01 17:52:41

I like the trade,it will be good for both teams,Flames this year and the Leafs down the road. Some Ottawa-know-it all ridiculed me awhile ago when I said watch for Blake to be traded.Good riddance.

The best post so far "Get Sundin out of retirement and put Grets in as coach."

Also load up on Canadian Players.
