What's your opinion of the Maple Leafs' trades?
Sun, January 31, 2010
The Calgary Flames shipped Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and defenceman Keith Aulie to the Maple Leafs in exchange for forwards Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and defenceman Ian White.

Later Sunday, goalie J.S. Giguere from the Anaheim Ducks for embattled goalie Vesa Toskala and overpriced forward Jason Blake.

Leafs will win the Stanley Cup! Don't know how. Don't know when........
Vince in Ottawa, 2010-02-03 22:31:55

Oh what a triumphant night at last! Most assuridly so for beleagered g.m. Brian Burke who for the night anyway sipped happily from victory's cup. No I am not getting carried away a la Lord Stanley. Not just yet. It is only one victory, but a sweet one it is and with a good dose of the "truculence and tenacity" that Burke has looked for since seasons start. A tough confident victory rather than another inadiquate loss. The scent of a new beginning of hope and prosperity. Keep it coming Leafs, and don't stop yet 'Burkie'. We brutalized fans need much much more of the same.

In this unmitigated disaster of a season for the Laffs, Burke has wrought a miracle. Imagine a team giving something for the backup goalie Toskala whose stats placed him 66th amongst NHL goaltenders and the grossly overpaid Blake whose contract runs until he is 39. These two contracts were the result of JFJ/Peddie/Penny's incompetence by the way. How painful was it to watch Vesa struggle to stop those rising over the shoulder shots. But in return for these two albatrosses, Burke managed to get in return a 32 year old 1st string goalie who apparently is a class act. Wow!

I like the headlines "Leafs Don't Give Up Much". The truth is they dont have much to give up. Burk's hands are tied,he does not have a ready made team gift wrapped like he did with the Ducks. Vancouver has done well since he and Crawford left town. He inherited a bunch of loosers in a looser organization who's only interest is pumping money into the Teachers Fund. The only way the team can keep in the headlines is having the media think it is the Leaf Nation. Give us a break, why should a last place team going no where be constantly in the headlines.

what a bunch of know it all losers, burke understands ya gotta get rid of the dead weight and clear out those contracts he was stuck with before things can improve or be like the rest of the canadian teams with no real chance of winning the cup,[ sorry vancouver ],your toronto envy is obvious, these trades cant make them worse

Look at all the armchair GM's here, it's a wonder NHL teams aren't knocking down your doors for all those astute hockey minds. Nothing wrong with this deal, Burke had to send a message to the players that even the top goal scorer is not safe. Hagman doesn't come to play every night, nor does Matt Stajan and Toskala, good riddance. If Dion doesn't regain his form it's not the end of the world, and Keith Aulie could certainly develop into a solid player.

People forget that rebuilding means lean years at least they are not selling the farm for aging vets. Dale Mitchell is developing nicely, Jerry D'Amigo looks pretty decent so if this team is still bad in three years then you can talk crap about Burke. Otherwise who gives a toss what a bunch of know nothing punks have to say.
Blah blah blah, 2010-02-02 16:19:23

Whata loser Burke is bringing Calgary's sloppy seconds to Toronto.

ITS ALL ABOUT BRIAN BURKE AND WILISON THESE MEN HAVE TO GO?????????????

Have to love Robert Tychowski's comment:

"Oilers fans want that first or second pick overall, but what they don't want is the kind of embarrassment and frustration it takes to finish dead last in a league that has the Toronto Maple Leafs in it." Any wonder Phaneuf wasnt boiling over with ecstasy when interviewed about the trade. Leafs are what they are because the city of Toronto is what it is. From the days of Ballard to the current Wilson and Burke lovefest every scapegoat the Toronto media and fans have targeted certainly has had their faults but its the Torontonians themselves that have sold out the ACC for the next 10 years that the Leafs will remain the self-centered fathead jackasses of the NHL.

Anybody but the Leafs, 2010-02-02 09:48:03

Scorned by his team mates, hated by Regehr, disabused by the media and ultimately abandoned by his childhood coach, the supposedly dumb Phaneuf enters the Laffs' dressing room and asks for the music to be turned up. Some might say he is dumb as well as deaf but wait a minute he is making $6.5M/yr and last time I looked that isn't Rosie O'Donnell on his arm.

Ron "soiled sheets" Wilson is clearly ecstatic. He has Phaneuf to throw out there now in place of little Ian White, a kid with a big heart but too little muscle. Who would you like to clear out Milan Lucic from the front of the net, Ian or Dion?

Is he coachable? Do you remember the way Coach Mo used to plead with McCabe in the final minutes of a game to try to follow instructions and Brian would do exactly the opposite of what he was told?

It will take only a few games for everyone to see if Dion continues to march to his own drummer and plays like McCabe, or does what Ron SS Wilson wants him to.

It was a trade well worth the risk since little (Ian) was lost and there is a huge potential upside. I couldn't stand watching any longer the Laffs lineup before these trades but watching how it unfolds has rekindled my interest.
