What's your opinion of the Maple Leafs' trades?
Sun, January 31, 2010
The Calgary Flames shipped Dion Phaneuf, forward Fredrik Sjostrom, and defenceman Keith Aulie to the Maple Leafs in exchange for forwards Matt Stajan, Niklas Hagman, Jamal Mayers and defenceman Ian White.

Later Sunday, goalie J.S. Giguere from the Anaheim Ducks for embattled goalie Vesa Toskala and overpriced forward Jason Blake.

Burke's next trade could be worse than the Kessel deal. I predict he will get a 1st round draft choice from a club in the bottom 1/3 of the league. He will then package that with a couple of players and move up to around a no. 10 pick in the first round. All of this to say "look I have a first round draft choice AND Kessel." Real dumb because he could have had Seguin or Hall and kept Kaberle.

Burke's ego and Peddie's stupidity are just killing the next 3-4 years for the Laffs.

The top line in the playoffs for the 67 Laffs was Pulford, Pappin and Stemkowski. If this thread is about trades, would anyone out there argue that those three at that time were better than the top three forwards of the Laffs today?

In an article dated May 25, Robert Tychkowski issues a cautionary note to the Hawks on the eve of the Cup finals, in relation to their young age average, saying "Yes, Jonathan Toews is 21, Patrick Kane is 22 and Dustin Byfuglien 25, but the ‘67 Leafs were young once, too."

Is he kidding? Maybe in 1950 they were young, but in 1967 their key players were Johnny Bower (42), Allan Stanley (41), Red Kelly (39) Terry Shawchuk (37),Tim Horton (37, George Armstrong (36) and Marcel Pronovost (36). The "younger" players included Bob Pulford (31), Kent Douglas (31), Bob Baun (30, Eddie Shack (30), Larry Hillman (30), Frank Mahovlich (29), Aut Erickson (29), Jim Pappin (28), Dave Keon (27) and Brian Conacher (26). Ron Ellis (22) was the only decent one in the same bracket as the young Hawks. So there is simply no comparison. In fact, THAT Leaf team would set the pattern for years to come whereby they'd gather every old crock available in the vain hope of capturing past "glory" forever overlooking the fact that, in 1967, they had to win 8 games to get the cup after playing a 70-game schedule - perhaps doable with a legion of geriatrics - but definitely a non starter when it became necessary to win 16 games after an 82-game marathon.

And that's a primary reason why they have become the annual joke in the NHL.

OK now the Kessel trade comes down to this:

1) Year one - Kessel for Hall or Seguin PLUS another high pick equivalent to what the best teams are going to get for their first round pick.

2) Year two - another top 5 pick. (There is no way the Laffs are going to be better than a bottom five team next year. Their roster of youngsters should be in the AHL getting some experience. Their AHL roster is dreadful with so little talent).

This is worse than anything that JFJ or even mad Mike Milbury could have dreamed up.

Kessel is a legitimate sniper but he is small, introverted and not a great team player or leader. He is always one good hard bodycheck away from being sidelined.

Wow. Three top players one of which is Hall or Seguin for Kessel? If Burke keeps saying he would do the trade again today, run and get the butterfly nets as this man needs help.

What do you say now Bill Evanochko. Who's eating what? That Kessel deal was the dumbest move since Sutter took three dud Leafs for Phaneuf. As for Dion in Toronto, we'll see how positive he remains next season when those college kids suddenly realize the pressure is back on. Of course, based on their stellar performance when the games didn;t mean anything, the Toronto media will have them nipping at the heels of a playoff spot once again. On and on ad nauseum.

LOLLLLLLLLLLLLL.

Yep!..Those were good trades boys.

BUT !!!

Wait until next year......hehehe.

Now ...if you leaf "fans" will excuse me....i've got some playoff hockey to watch.

The JFJ/Peddie/Penny era wil haunt the Laffs for a long, long time. His successor (Fletch) made moves that were easy(how hard was it to part with players like Devereaux and Tlusty?) but even Fletch made a few mistakes. Anyone could see that he got Fingered when he paid Fingers $4M/yr. Who advised him to do that? Was it the JFJ holdover Mike Penny?

The more serious stuff is the Kessel trade made by Burke. How many people with a normal sized ego would have parted with TWO 1st rounders and a 2nd round draft choice? Terrible egotistical move that Peddie should have stopped dead in its tracks. To try to make up for it Burke has acquired 4th round and 7th round picks but that won't help much. Kessel will wither as time marches on and this move will rank as one of the worst trades ever perpretrated on the Laffs' fans. Even JFJ's acquisition of Toskala for a handful of draft picks isn't as bad as Burke's decision to make "a signature deal."

BEST TRADE FOR LEAFS SINCE THE GILMOR. A FEW MORE LIKE THAT AND WE WILL BE PARTYING ON YONGUE ST.

Leafs suck and so do their fans... nuff said.
Alden, 2010-02-08 14:11:20

I give it about 5 more games and all the ney sayers will be hiding in the closet and eating thier words. Best trade since thornton in the NHL and Dougie in 92.
