Does hockey need to get tough on players who deliver shots to the head? Mon, January 18, 2010
Mikael Tam of the Quebec Remparts was listed in stable condition in hospital after taking an elbow to the head from Rouyn-Noranda centre Patrice Cormier, who captained Canada at the recent world junior hockey championship.
This is just the latest in a series of vicious head shots at the NHL and junior levels this season.
There was speculation that the QMJHL, which has come down hard on cases of violence this season, will suspend Cormier for the rest of the season and perhaps for the playoffs.
Is this a lynching or what? It was an elbow, thier are rules to govern these type of incidents, just inforce the rule, no need for police or suspending this kid for life, it hockey not Curling. If you think it is to rough or violent switch to another sport.

I know hockey is a rough sport but there is a difference between a clean hit and a dirty shot. I just returned from Bosnia where I assist with a young hockey program there and we stress shoulder not elbows when making contact. It seems that the rise of illegal contact has become the norm in the NHL and is filtering down to the other levels of hockey. Cormier should be the example that teaches others that you are not going to get away with this type of hockey any longer. Bring back the rough but clean hockey of years ago..

I sometimes wonder if the coaches are the ones controlling the players and encouraging them to do these thing. Do it or sit on the bench for awhile. Not that I condone dirty hitting, but I think the players are doing it to stay on the team, and as long as the rules are allowing it, they will keep doing it.

OMG! pieguy did you even see the video???? You can see Cormier stick out his elbow. What else would you call an attempt to injure? Idiots like you probably condone the swinging of sticks as part of hockey too, just because it happened in the past. You don't watch hockey, go to the complete moron comment board.

Whoa Back your horses up! This game is fast and a bit violent and has and will continue to be or there wouldn't be so many fans!
There are enough rules, penalties and sanctions in the rule books to deal with this. The refs and league disciplinarians just need to start to apply them more. The intent to injure is a lot different than a hit that goes bad. Your snarling about this young and you forget he is still a kid being suspended for seasons or life is ridiculous. You don't watch hockey. go to a knitting comment board.

Where has the respect for your fellow competitor gone in young hockey players today? If you watch closely, Cormier lined Tam up from the side of the wall and when he couldn't get his shoulder into him, threw the elbow up at his head. He took a couple of cheap shots at players at the World Jr's and he continuesto play the game with blatant disregard for others. while he is indeed a very skilled player, he needs to show some restraint with plays like this and suspending him for the remainder of the year and play-offs will hopefully allow him to get the message. As many of the comments suggest, his style of play is not the Canadian brand of hockey we all played and admire.

Cormier is nothing but a bully and a cheap disgrace to this great nation. Ban him from the sport, charge him with assault, take him to court and put in jail so that he can have time to re-consider his actions and others could learn.

Terrible we put a "C" on this guys chest for Canada.
We need to suspend players for "years" for these type of infractions. For vicious hits that jeopradize a victims career the offender must have his career in the same jeoprady.

If these kinds of hits damaged elbows as much as they damage heads, goons would think twice. Ban hard elbow pads. Make all players accountable for what they are hitting with.

This Cormier is a disgrace to hockey and to the Canadian Juniors. Should never get to play again. The past predicts the future. There are plenty of kids out there who would love to play hockey at a high level and respect the game. No room for someone like Patrice Cormier in sports, now or ever!
