Does hockey need to get tough on players who deliver shots to the head?
Mon, January 18, 2010

Mikael Tam of the Quebec Remparts was listed in stable condition in hospital after taking an elbow to the head from Rouyn-Noranda centre Patrice Cormier, who captained Canada at the recent world junior hockey championship.

This is just the latest in a series of vicious head shots at the NHL and junior levels this season.

There was speculation that the QMJHL, which has come down hard on cases of violence this season, will suspend Cormier for the rest of the season and perhaps for the playoffs.

Coward. Comes right off the bench and delivers a blindsided cheap shot. YES suspend him for the rest of the season of course. But this coward should not play next year either. For any team. Flex some muscle Hockey Canada! show kids this cannot happen. without a steep suspension, all you are doing is creating a target, which will escalate this foolish behaviour. Send the message - Purge out these cowards. Let our kids learn how to play the great games like gentlemen, and show the world we can win by doing so.

This individual should be charged and sentenced accordingly for assault causing bodily harm.

Absolutely leave the head out of it. HIts, or body contact need to hinder,or intervene with the puck carriers play making intentions. If the intervention stops the puck from getting in the scoring zone of the ice, then mission accommplished. There is no way that this mission requires anyone to hit any player near the head. Arms must stay down, and focus should be on the shoulder torso area when planning to intervene with body contact. I would never want to think that a loved one of mine, or myself could possibly die playing hockey due to the actions of an opposing player.

Definitely a cheap shot.

Hockey is our religion in Canada and what Cormier has done is blasphemy.

Not the first time either watch the highlight of the exhibition game against the Sweden, only difference, he was a Swede.

We should be critical even then when he is one of our guys. I am ashamed as a Canadian.

Note to Boogaard for next season - Flatten this punk. That's the only way he'll get it.

Someday some poor kid is gonna die right on the ice.

Reg Kirby - I dare you to find even one time when Don Cherry has promoted the kind of hit that Cormier delivered. Don't go spouting off about people untill you have a clue what you're talking about. Don Cherry has consistantly spoken out AGAINST these types of cheap hits! He has spent thousands of dollars on campaigns to try to stop hitting from behins and other cheap shots. He has always promoted a tough but clean and fair type of hockey!

Cormier was given the largest suspension the Q could give him. This is Cormier's last year of Junior and he has been suspended for the remainder of it! There isn't anything more the league can do.

As for charges, most Crown Prosecutors leave the disipline to the individual league. Only if the Crown deems the punishment to be too lenient will they step in and lay charges. Also the Leagues cannot "have these guys charged". Thats not how the legal system works here in Canada. The Crown lays charges if THEY see fit. Individuals do not have other individuals charged with crimes.

So the little wimp can't play for the rest of the year, boy that will show him.

He should never play hockey again, period.

Cormier should never be allowed to lace up another pair of skates again because of his disregard and lack of respect for other players.

He's like this now and he will be like this in the NHL and I do hope that someone cleans the wimps clock next time he does this, he will do it again because he knows there is no punishment for his behaviour.

None of these suspensions were severe enough! It is time that all of the leagues start having these guys charged with assualt. This kind of action on the ice is not what this game is supposed to be about. People like Don Cherry are dead wrong when they say that it is. Speed, agility and clean hits are part of the game, intentional injury by another player is not!
Reg Kirby, 2010-01-25 19:36:10

it's about time that the punishment fit the crime. No one should get away with that kind of play, at any level of hockey!!!
jo, 2010-01-25 18:53:44

Cormier's hit was more serious than the Erie Otter player's hit on the Kitchener Ranger - there was clear intent to injure in this case and I don't know that the same can be said for the Erie Otter player. You see his type of hit thousands of times a year in every level of hockey. He's gone for life.

No consistency here - the message is that you'll get different treatment if you're a star in the league. It's not as if Cormier doesn't have a history of this crap (i.e. recall his performance in the World Juniors).

Don't get me wrong - I think Cormier's punishment is very appropriate, but I also think that the penalty to the Erie Otter player was ridiculous. There's not even a 2 minute penalty for him if the Kitchener Ranger player doesn't go down with serious injuries.
