Does hockey need to get tough on players who deliver shots to the head?
Mon, January 18, 2010

Mikael Tam of the Quebec Remparts was listed in stable condition in hospital after taking an elbow to the head from Rouyn-Noranda centre Patrice Cormier, who captained Canada at the recent world junior hockey championship.

This is just the latest in a series of vicious head shots at the NHL and junior levels this season.

There was speculation that the QMJHL, which has come down hard on cases of violence this season, will suspend Cormier for the rest of the season and perhaps for the playoffs.

There are incidental hits to the head and there are intentional hits to the head. One is excusable the other is unacceptable. I go to plenty of OHL games and I have not noticed a lack of physical play due to the stringent rules on head shots, so I don't buy argument that it takes contact out of the game.

The suspension of Patrice Cormier was fair punishment for an intentional head shot and deep down he knows it and he's going to have to wait until training camp before he gets back on the ice for competitive action.

He will not play in the NHL or AHL this season as there is an agreement in place between the NHL and CHL which the Devils have also acknowledged.

The point I'm trying to make is hockey can still be played with physicality without resorting to cheap shots and dirty tactics.

Hopefully Mikael Tam has a speedy recovery and gets back to playing at an elite level. Patrice Cormier made a mistake and he must pay the price. That being said he also deserves another chance to show that he can be a physical player within the boundaries of the rule book.

I think like always Cormier got away with murder. He should be suspended indefinitely from playing juniors and also the NHL. Heck I think he should be brought up on criminal charges as well.

To those who want to blame Don Cherry:

Don Cherry has done more campaigning for safety in hockey than other sportscaster in Canada. There's plenty of TV footage to prove it.

Maybe you should actually watch Coach's Corner for a change.

It's unfortunate that Cherry often gets criticized for the stereotype others put on him.

I completely respect the QMJHL for taking its time in delivering its decision on how long to suspend Cormier. Unlike David Branch and the OHL, they didn't get caught in the public uproar, they took carefully considered all the angles.

A suspension is like a coupon for a free pizza: it's only worth something if it's honoured.

The NHL and AHL are in no way obligated to observe the ban on Cormier. He could play in Lowell or New Jersey tomorrow. However, these leagues do have an affiliation with each other the suspension will be honoured because it is very reasonable for all of the leagues involved. By suspending Cormier for this year only, the Q effectively ended his junior career, but aren't going to make the pro leagues look bad when Cormier turns pro.

Hurricane_Canada - The Rockem Sockem videos show fist fights, open ice legal hits and other legal hits. Don Cherry has CONSISTANTLY railed against head shots, checking from behind and stick work at all levels of hockey. Maybe you should actually listen to what Don Cherry has to say instead of his bleeding heart critics!

No one person in hockey has called for the crap to be tossed out of hockey than Don Cherry. It burns my ass when idiots like you attack someone because of what they heard from some other arm chair hockey guru!

He did the same in the Junior tournament...twice and needs to get a grip....No wonder we only got silver...no discipline
Chuck, 2010-01-26 14:19:56

Do the crime...do the time! The punishment is justified. He did the same damn thing during the Junior Pre-Tourny to that young Swedish player. A few of these young players are being brought up with no respect for each other. The idea is to knock the opponent off the puck, not knock the guy's head off his shoulders. At what point will common sense prevail?
Bocephus, 2010-01-26 14:08:11

To Reg Kirby...I don't know where you get your "information" on Don Cherry. He has never condoned this type of hit, has in fact railed against it on Coaches Corner many times. As a matter of fact, he has also called for the elimination of the plastic pieces in the shoulder and elbow pads. The elbow pads these days completely take away the possibility that you are going to get hurt when delivering a deliberate attempt to injure such as cormier's classless, cowardly, deliberate head shot to Tam.

This type of action does not belong in any sport and harsher penalties need to be in place and enforced if the players cannot stop themselves from these "heat of the moment" actions.

People, people, people. Cormier WAS given a VERY stiff suspension. He cannot play Junior hockey EVER again or in ANY Hockey Canada event for the remainder of this year.

Hockey Canada does not have the right to tell the NHL or KHL that a player cannot play in their league. The NHL is a BUSINESS! Cormier WILL play for the New Jersey Devils, probably this year. That's their right.

As for Cormier being charged...... so what? He'll get a fine or a Conditional Discharge and go right on with his lucrative hockey career. Marty McSorely received a Conditional Discharge after trying to remove Brashears head with a 2-hander!! Do you really think the courts will waste much time on this? The Quebec Junior League dealt out the harshest suspension it could. For that I applaud them. If Michael Tam can't continue on with his hockey career because of this hit then he has plenty of legal avenues at his disposal and I hope he persues them.
