Does hockey need to get tough on players who deliver shots to the head?
Mon, January 18, 2010

Mikael Tam of the Quebec Remparts was listed in stable condition in hospital after taking an elbow to the head from Rouyn-Noranda centre Patrice Cormier, who captained Canada at the recent world junior hockey championship.

This is just the latest in a series of vicious head shots at the NHL and junior levels this season.

There was speculation that the QMJHL, which has come down hard on cases of violence this season, will suspend Cormier for the rest of the season and perhaps for the playoffs.

Hockey is one of the biggest wastes of time I can imagine. It is a game, not real life. It is played by overpaid muscell bound half wits, made out to be Gods by people with absolutely no grounding in reality. As an adult male who served over 30 years in our Military I can honestly and proudly say my Canada does not include this mind numbing, boring, inane activity. If you have nothing to do, go to a gym, get out for a walk...do something. Watching hockey is doing nothing. Terry

hey Terry and Peiguy; I see you walking down the street, run up and elbow you to the head, down you go. I get off scot-free by telling the arresting officer, "I was only playing hockey" do you wonder why you two are in the minority here? It's because you have cavemen mentalities. don't be afraid of evolution

Patrice Cormier wants to be a successful NHL hockey player. I expect he, and those around him, want the benefits of that lifestyle. The notoriety, fame and money will come, but all of that comes with a price. He, like each and every one of us, MUST be held accountable for his actions. The fact that he plays hockey, our national pasttime, captained our World Junior team should mean absolutely nothing when it comes to accepting the punishment he was given. There are NO 'Get Out of Jail Free' cards in life. We need to stop treating athletes, superstars, and movie stars as though they are above the law. Maybe we need to look more closely at the what happens on the ice and on the sporting fields to ensure that the laws of the land are observed as they would be on the sidewalk and street.

If he did something like this off the ice he would likely get to spend some time in prison. He has not yet been charged witha criminal offense, but he should be. Just because it's "part of the game" doesn't mean it should not be subject to the law of the land.

You know, if someone pulled the same stunt off ice they'd be charged with assault. How many times does the question have to be asked 'Why should it be different on ice?' And too bad for Rouyn-Noranda that was building for the playoffs. Maybe somebody should have made that point to Cormier.

God, what is wrong with this guy? He's obviously talented. And yet he pulls this low move. A real man would have taken on Tam face to face. So you know what I think of Cormier.

Even professional football got rid of the headshots. Now .. we must do the same. In the meantime as in the days when I played.. soft elbow pads, soft shoulder pads with leather only protectors and all must wear full face cage. Get rid of all plastics in this type of gear except helmet. And for goodness sakes start calling the high sticking before blood is drawn!! ... and while we are at it .. if your going to call interference and hooking, do it all season long! Applying the rules for seasonal play then ignoring it during playoffs truly screws up all players. They're always readapting due to officiating and league inconsistancy.

Hockey players are like children. You must be consistant when applying the rules.

He should not play until the victim does. Then you have what you give you get!

There's something disturbing about a person that can smile and admire his work as his opponent lies convulsing in front of him.

I wouldn't miss this kid if he never played again.

I agree with the suspension given to Cormier and I think it is a disgrace to the management of his team to even consider an appeal. I will gurantee you if the hit had been done by Tam on Cormier the management of Cormier's team would have been calling for Tam's head on a platter. Patrice has all the talent to make it to the NHL and does not have to play this type of game , so there has got to be something going on with him I really think he needs help or sooner or later he will be the one laying on the ice wondering what day it is or where he is at. I watched both of his team games in Lewiston last weekend and you could see that it bothered his teamates what he had done.

Susan - In Todd Bertuzzi's case I disagree with you. Yes he should have been suspended for alot longer than he was however the NHL is a business and playing hockey is his job.

In that sense what you are saying is if you punched a co-worker then you should never be allowed to work for ANY company again. Therefore denying you a means of survival and a means of supporting your family.

The NHL is a business like any other.
