Which city deserves an NHL team the most?
Fri, October 16, 2009

By Mike Zeisberger, Sun Media

Many of the Gary Bettman bashers figure the NHL commissioner seems to turn a blind eye to anything north of the 49th parallel.

To this increasingly vocal group that maintains Bettman is anti-Canadian, it doesn't seem to matter that he has continued to talk with Hamilton officials since Jim Balsillie's bid to move the Phoenix Coyotes to Steeltown died last month.

Or that, during the Coyotes trial, he pondered why the NHL would not at least touch base with Winnipeg in the event of the team's relocation, since that was the original birthplace of the franchise.

Or that he hosted a meeting a week ago with Quebec City Mayor Regis Labeaume, who wants to resurrect the Quebec Nordiques.

To these conspiracy theorists, Bettman's ultimate plan is to plop teams in Kansas City and Las Vegas one day while ignoring areas such as Winnipeg, Quebec City, and southern Ontario. It is a suggestion he vehemently denies.

"I'm sure there are people in Quebec City who would say if a team is moving to Canada, why should it be southern Ontario? Why shouldn't we get a team back?" Bettman says. "I'm sure there are people in Winnipeg who are saying the same thing. If the Coyotes move, I'm sure they say, 'Why aren't the Coyotes coming back here now that we have a new arena?' And so, there will always be a debate as to where the right fit is. But to the extent people think I have this master list hanging on my office wall in terms of where we are going next, that is not the case. If the opportunity presents itself, then we will look at all the situations and try to make the best judgment. You can confirm for yourself ... there is no list on my wall. Search away, You can look in all the drawers also."

What city should the NHL expand or relocate to in the future? Does it matter whether it is in Canada or the U.S.? Have your say in our forum.

Bettman: Have patience

Now Columbis is reportedly in financial trouble, losing over $12 mil a year. But not to worry, Bettman and the NHL will buy the franchise and then look around for some other doofus to purchase it and keep it in Columbus. Where it will continue to lose money.

Betman has small man syndrome..Has to prove his power becausse of his size. He doesn't care about all the kids that play hockey outdoors in Canada, how they would love to see an NHL team back in Winnipeg, or Quebec. As parents we invented toughness, practise at 7 am before school, outdoor practise at -30 C. That little monster has taken away dreams of the Canadian hockey fan, I've been to watch the Coyotes, the seas are mostly emmpty..At least in Wpg, the arena would be sold out every game..btw...where the hell is Red Deer, its a place to get petrol on way to Calgary.

Bettman can "vehemently denie" anything the fans think. While he flies around to these cities to wine and dine on the fans monies, I'll take him up on searching his office offer, but he will have to pick up the tab not the average hockey fan. The man does nothing positive for any team north of the 49th, talks allot of nothing for poor market teams and all about the poor 14 fans in Phenoix. OK i'm done ranting about this poor excuse for a man. Put me down for a team in southern Ontario screw both the Leafs and the Sabers play decent hockey or give fans another choice.

Would now not be a good time for Canoe to come-up with their annual question :"What are your thoughts on the leafs roster?". I'm sure it would be a "hit"....:)

Winnipeg and QC let their franchises die....

That boat has sailed for them. Find a home other than those two.

Red Deer would be a more logical choice than QC or Winnipeg.

Or better yet have a franchise in Kitchener. As long as Balsillie is shut out.

Bettman is clearly an idiot and should be fired.I guess Balsile hasnt broken enough laws to qualify to own NHL hockey team. Now he wants to give Quebec a team, but they already showed they dont have the fan support for an NHL team.Hamilton or Kitchener would be the perfect spot there are so many starving fans here waiting for a good NHL hockey team. I appreciate a good joke, JohnBoy, but not repetitive ones that cease being funny on the 15th go-around!

By the way, if my shorts are too tight, your headgear must be confining because you've lost the ability to spell. I think what you meant was "sense" - both times.

Gary O's got a point. Let's not forget though, the real meaning of TSN is Toronto Sports Network. Those guys haven't done a single decent article on any other hockey team in Canada and, just as Gary pointed out, they can't even get stories on their beloved Crappy Leafs.

As for Bettman, I think it's fully time we tie him up behind a zamboni and drive it for a few hours.

Thought I might point out to you people at Canoe sports that there is a very successful Canadian franchise east of Ottawa called the Montreal Canadians. I don't recall seeing many articles about them in this newsletter so I just don't want you to think that Bettman slipped a new franchise into Canada while you guys were sleeping.

What a load of pure bull , how can you media people swallow Bettman's manure and actually smile while doing it . Bettman got what he wanted - No team for Hamilton , no team for Jim who stood up to him and for sure no team in Canada . Now it's time for the damagecontrol . Isupported small market teams in Ottawa , Edmonton & Calgary , I your hero , geez makes me puque in my mouth . It was more like if only I could find some more dumb enough owners I could put these teams in the Sunbelt.
