What are your memories of Mats Sundin?
Wed, September 30, 2009

By MIKE ZEISBERGER, SUN MEDIA

Mats Sundin hung up his blades, never having fulfilled his dream of bringing a Stanley Cup to Toronto.

But it certainly was fun watching him try, wasn't it?

For 13 seasons the big Swede was the face of the Leaf franchise, registering more goals (420) and points (987) than any other player in team history. Only fellow countryman Borje Salming had more assists.

Yet critics always pointed to the fact that Sundin was never able to lead Toronto to an appearance in the final, something that frustrated the smooth-skating centre over the years. It is a significant blemish on his resume that cannot be ignored.

But that's not how he should be remembered in Toronto.

How do you think Mats Sundin should be remembered? Have your say in our forum.

1. when Sundin threw his stick in the stands 2. When Alfie mimicked the act, and laff fans got upset, saying that he was no class, and Sundin was the heart and soul of the team, how Sundin was, and always will be a laff, 3. Listening to the so called laff fans pick on him call him selfish , and uncaring. How he made the laffs bad, how he never won a cup.

I may not be a Laff fan, but even I know what he meant to a bad team over the years. He was a good player, he was a good spokesman, and he deserves the respect of the hockey world today.

yea, the big swede left the left the leafs hanging instead of getting them draft picks and/or players. Don Cherry was right, he knew he was washed up then.We certainly did!!!!

Sundin was always more interested in having a long vacation at the end of the season than he was in trying to bring any kind of cup to Toronto. He was one of the most highly overrated players in Maple Leaf history and the Leafs will be a much better team with him gone. No team that had Mats Sundin playing on it would EVER win a Stanley Cup!

The fact that they never put together a team good enough to win the Cup has little to do with the individual. Otherwise, Gretzky would have won the Cup every year he played the game and won the Hart Trophy as the best player.

Marcel Dionne never won a Cup either but he's in the HHoF as a great player.

I saw all four of the Leafs Cup winning teams in the 60s. I'll remember Sundin for what he was to me: the best Leaf I ever saw.

Seeing Mats getting stitched on the bench and not taking his eyes off the ice the entire time Thats a tough Captain .. but my best memory of Mats was his OT goal on kiprusoff in TO .. third goal of the game gam e winner and 500th of his career ... It doesnt get much better than that .. The best leaf ever and the most heart of any Leaf under the toughest of circustances as a team leader ...No Stanley Cup but a true Champion and a delight as a hockey fan to have lived in that era .. Thanks Mats !!
