What are your memories of Mats Sundin?
Wed, September 30, 2009

By MIKE ZEISBERGER, SUN MEDIA

Mats Sundin hung up his blades, never having fulfilled his dream of bringing a Stanley Cup to Toronto.

But it certainly was fun watching him try, wasn't it?

For 13 seasons the big Swede was the face of the Leaf franchise, registering more goals (420) and points (987) than any other player in team history. Only fellow countryman Borje Salming had more assists.

Yet critics always pointed to the fact that Sundin was never able to lead Toronto to an appearance in the final, something that frustrated the smooth-skating centre over the years. It is a significant blemish on his resume that cannot be ignored.

But that's not how he should be remembered in Toronto.

How do you think Mats Sundin should be remembered? Have your say in our forum.

Sundin was a big lazy house cat sunning himself at the crease whose only claim to fame was as Harry Neil used to say "the famous Mats Sundin face wash"

I just wish someone would have knocked him out when he did that, just once.

My memories of Mats are those of a great player who's talent was under utilized. Had he played with better wingers while with the Leafs, his talent an appreciation would have been more noticeable. Shame he never won the Cup....he deserved it. All the best to Mats and enjoy married life!

There's only one reason the Toronto Maple Leafs are cup dry and his name is Sam Pollack and there will never be another one like him .....Go Leafs Go

I always respected Mats. He was definitely the best player in a Leafs jersey the majority of his career and I find it rather sad that people would actually insult him after all he's done for the team. The guy broke records, smiled at the camera and wouldn't even say negative about fans when YOU turned on him. Sundin didn't turn his back on Toronto... you turned your back on Sundin. If you were Mats would you honestly want to play for a team that gets constantly booed in their own arena? The Reality is that Sundin may not have brought us a cup but he certainly is one of the only reasons we could even hope for one over the past 13 years. Seriously though, does booing the team on the ice really impact management? You're still buying a ticket... all you're doing is decreasing your own teams morale. "fans" like the majority of the posters here are one of the main reasons I'm beginning to care less and less about this sport.

Have a great retirement Matts my only regret was you did not finish as a Maple Leaf but thanks for always trying and being a good leader. It was a shame we could not have given you better team to play with.

The next cup is for you.

Sundin was one of the best to wear the "C". Here we have a man who was scorned when he came over for another great, Clark. It is hard to hear negative statements about him considering people are comparing him to Gilmore and Clark who also didn't bring the Stanley Cup to Toronto. The man put in 13 years here and with a management who made deals that made no sense long term but just to please their bosses in the short term. Sundin and others like Domi, Tucker to name a couple took the home town discount to play here in hopes to get to cup, but got nothing. Don't blame Sundin, he was only one in a the Team and it was ran be poor management at the time after there Fletch left and even when Sundin was willing to stay when he came back temporary, he go told he was not needed. Sundin then the classy person he is didn't complain and for that he got labelled. Even with the Canucks his heart was not in it with that team,he still wanted to be a Leaf! Well for me he will always be. Thanks Mats Sundin, you are Great!

That insidious "pepsodent" smile after every goal - even if it was the 1 goal in a 6-1 loss or the 6th goal in a 6-1 win.

I'm tired of hearing comments from "Leaf fans" who constantly rip Sundin - pisses me off. All the guy did was play his heart out every year. How about focusing your vile towards those who deserved it - Ownership and management???? Please, I'm begging anyone to tell me the last Stanley Cup champion who had just one great player on their team. I'll be waiting. Do you really believe that if you substituted Yzerman for Sundin and everything else remained exactly the same that Toronto would have several cups and Detroit would have nothing??? Wake up.

Thanks Mats for an outstanding career and always doing your best on mediocre Leaf teams. You always showed what you could do when surrounded by great players - like during the World Championships. Enjoy your retirement.

Have to agree with Mr. Brodhagen. I don't really think Sundin "bled blue" as many liked to think. In ranking him as a captain, he didn't even come close to Wendel Clarke, Darryl Sittler, or Rick Vaive.

my lasting memory of mats will be his refusal to accept a trade to help this franchises future, especially when everyone else on the planet knew that they where going to miss the playoffs. if mats goes, this team gets a great package, possibly kaberle leaves for jeff carter and a first, and the rest of the rat pack may have also been flipped for players or prospects. thanks mats!
