Which team won Heatley deal?
Mon, September 14, 2009

By DON BRENNAN, SUN MEDIA

Combined, Milan Michalek and Jonathan Cheechoo will make a little less money than Dany Heatley this season.

They also have the potential to score a few more goals.

In the eyes of Ottawa-born defenceman Dan Boyle who plays for San Jose, however, it's impossible to determine right now the winner in Saturday's blockbuster deal between the Senators and the Sharks.

Which team do you think won the Heatley trade? Have your say in our forum.

Sharks accept Heatley as is

About what I expected. A lot of noise signifying nothing. So he wants out because his "role was diminished." Did it ever occur to him that, by playing every shift at 100% (not unreasonable considering what they're paying him), and being as responsible in his own end as he is in the offensive zone, that he would have earned a bigger role? Clearly, the thought never crossed his small mind. His idea of being a "team player" is at opposite ends of the spectrum from the guy running Team Canada and, quite frankly, I don't understand why Yzerman would even want him around next monday.

And Ed, while I certainly can't disagree with your low opinion of Murray, and while I could list a dozen reasons why he should have been dumped, I don't see any connection between his shortcomings and the Heatley situation!

That came to him out of the blue, as it did with everyone else, and I'm sure he did his level best to try and conclude a deal that saw Ottawa not coming out of it holding the shitty end of the stick.

Having said that, I still think he should have been looking at it from the get-go as an opportunity to shed $7.5 million from the cap and use that money to pursue other options. Because next year, when the cap drops significantly, he has 5 RFAs to deal with, among them Lee and Campoli. He's going to need the cash then.

Just another in a long line of "entitled athletes" wanting more for less. When are we as the ones who actually pay their salaries going to say enough is enough. I saw the article on his reported news conference, what a load of crap. Nothing about why he enacted the no trade after forcing Murray to look, nothing about the long silence, nothing about his poor performance over the last little while. As far as I am concerned, this guy can go the way of the dodo bird. The problem is, is that some GM will actually step up and pay. I am ashamed that Yzerman feels he can still represent this counrty.

I'm going to give the guy a break, maybe he made a rash decision and was stuck once it became public. The fact that he has said nothing might mean he changed his mind and wasn't sure what to do or how to explain. It must have been a tough situation. I like him, always have, likely always will. He's a solid player, I say give him a chance to explain, at the very least. Maybe he will just bow out gracefully, say he made a mistake and go on to have a great season with whatever team he's with (hopefully Ottawa). Also I want him on Team Canada :)

Anywhere that he won't get paid. He doesn't deserve the salary awarded to him by a team that has only shown him all the consideration in the world.

Baby Heatley...go play in your backyard in BC.

Ottawa's problems are the result of a lame GM, period.
Ed, 2009-08-21 11:29:15

Exactly, Gary. Anywhere but Ottawa. And I wouldn't put him on Team Canada, either. Team first, no exceptions. Hey Dany, answer the phone: The KHL is calling. You can be the big fish in a little pond for your entire career.

he will play in Ottawa and have a career year.....He has to win back everyone, fans, GM's, owners....the move has brought him dissrespect no matter who's fault it is....Dany save face fire your agent for misrepresentation and go to Ottawa in good faith ...it will pay off in the long run
TIM, 2009-08-21 11:01:16

Not cool making people wait. I hope he makes the right decision, cuts out any bullshit and gets on with it. Last thing Ottawa needs is another Yashin story...now that guy was an idiot.

HEatley will most certainly drop a bomb shell! Can't see him staying so quiet for so long and not have anything of value to the reason why he did so; regardless if selffish or not; it should be worth the press conference....unless the unsuccessful trade attempts wil make him come to pasture with his tail between his legs and head bowing...which he should...good or not; I would not want him on my team!

He can play on the moon for all I care. All I know is, there is no way he should be be playing any more games for the Sens. Nor should he be part of Team Canada simply because the emphasis there is on "Team" - something he clearly has no grasp of in his childish behaviour.

Now we'll hear the spin today, concocted no doubt by his agents - they've had over two months to prepare it!
